well the boy and I went to a tractor pull tonight, hes back, girls not, anyway had a great night, had ended up getting 4 hooks in,what my ears heard,i never watch when tuning(it heightens the sense of sound) the datalogger disputed.so I went with experience and it worked flawless.ordering some new o2 sensers tomorrow.after the pull we stopped at a mcdonalds/gas station, its after midnight,we eat go to the truck, boy goes in the trailer to check the chains.out of nowhere a middle aged woman appears by the truck, she seems very upset, kinda like shes extremely scared,i put my hand she cant see on protection, the door is open too.her story is shes lost her debit card and is traveling with her mother and 3 children and is about out of gas,has about 150 miles to home.i didn"t see her come into the lot,i simply wasn"t paying attention,i lied and told her I didn"t have a debit card, she said ok and walked to her vehicle,a minivan.i did have about 80$ in my pocket.the boy came up got in the driver seat and started the truck, the lady slowly drove by us on my side,i looked down into her van and a old woman holing a young child was the passenger and kids were sleeping in the rear seats, she went out another exit and across the street to other busnisses.b4 we got on the interstate I felt terrible,as we were drivin I fessed up and told the boy I set a bad example for him,he says I was just playin it safe by not reachin in my pocket or getting out in a not well lit area,my conscious is bothering me terribly....second issue, boy is tired, been up 23 hrs, were ten miles from home on a 2lane state route,he asks me if I would drive the rest of the way home,im a diabetic and lost my cdl in 96 cause im insulin dependant, state asked and I didn"t fight it,i didn"t need them at the time.so I told him to pull over,i checked my sugar,it was good,i finished the trip with no problems...my concern,i feel guilty about the lady, and I broke a major driving law...concern 2,while at the pharmacy ,after I gave my cdl up,i see a guy pickin up insulin too,hes wearing a insulin pump exactly like mine,i do a quick sweep of the store looking for the driver, noone,oh hes a state employee driving a highway dept tri-axle by himself.both my docs says its the law, federal, the state says their right but I see other guys shootin up insulin and driving cdl, hows this possible???

The "out of gas-out of money" scam is a common one at interstate gas stations. Maybe the woman was honest, but her quick trip the next gas station indicates she knew enough not to stick around and risk having someone call the police.

If you were out of gas and lost your wallet, would you start hitting up random strangers for cash? Would you be concerned about an encounter with law enforcement, or would you welcome their help?

As for your CDL, if you want it back and have your diabetes under control, I suspect you can get an exemption. Times have changed since '96. Check with your state.

In KS state employees, county employees, school bus driver employees, and fire truck drivers don't need medical cards. State makes laws for you to abide by not themselves.

I was recently approached by a young woman outside a drug store asking for money because she had run out of gas. I declined and as I drove away I saw her get into the car of a young man that I had noticed there. I feel no guilt at not giving to panhandlers because I give appropriately at church every week. I can be confident that the money is being well spent.

I suppose now I could use the license at times like these, otherwise I have no intensions of ever driving a truck.my dad was a otr trucker,so I got my cdl too,ive never drove a truck as a job or for income, only to pulls,i know the pickup and goosaeneck are over the 26000 lbs, probably a bunch are, just never worried about it.i would only really use them on fri, sat, sun, may till nov,and not every weekend, this is the first time this has happened.we don't have police within a 10 mile area, but most of the trips involve other states

Many moons ago when I was driving the road in the truck, if someone approached me aboot being broke I would ask them if they are hungry or just wanted money, if they said they haven"t eaten for a while I would buy them dinner. If they yust wanted the money I didn"t give them no.

I really think that woman was just a professional beggar. They are everywhere, in our area, due to several interstate highways crossing. Just a few days ago, I was approached by a woman in a wide-load escort van. Claimed she needed money to get the next job. Told her sorry, my own business is all I can afford to finance.

A few years ago, I had some major health problems, and had trouble getting around, and looked like I had one foot in the grave. During that time, everywhere I went, Beggars would come out of the woodwork to harass me, even to the point of being threatening.. Most beggars are nothing but predators that prey on people so they can buy liquor and drugs.

99% of the out of gas folks are scammers. I can point you right now at a woman who has been,"tryin to get to Binghamton" for 10 or so years.

Unfortunately, it was probably a scam but I know how you feel that maybe she really needed help. I'm sure I have been scammed several times but I try not to worry about it, its on their head not mine if a lie was told. One time my Wife and I turned a woman down then got a mile or so away and felt bad and went back just in time to catch the ''desperate'' woman cracking a fresh beer, the first and only time beer ever saved me from looking stupid.

You can't tell the difference, someone in need or just a con artist, and its fine to play it safe because of that.

One morning around 6AM while working on a job in NYC next to washington square park, I had gone around to the passenger door of my f150, to get a roll of blue prints, and other things for work. A man rolled up on me silently, on a bicycle, this was during the winter, it was dark, never heard him and he wanted money and was not shy about it. I had tossed everything back in the cab and had reacted harshly, having been startled by someone tapping me on the shoulder in the dark. The man was being aggressive about it, I told him to buzz off loudly, neighbors shouted out the windows at me ! Told them to buzz off too as I fondly remember, this was right on the NYU campus. The guy threw the bike on the ground and came after me, he took a swing at me, which was blocked, his arm caught in a hold, his leg blocked and he was thrown to the ground. I see NYPD sitting in a patrol car on the other (south) side of the park, so I go over and tell them what just happened, literally in front of them, too busy with who knows what to see though. Officer says "you didn't hit him did you ???" Nope, he fell! Fun way to start off the day, some can and will be violent.

IF you truly knew the person asking for help was legitimate, its a good thing to do, helping someone, but you just never know, could be the exact opposite, robbery, theft, assault etc.

The man mentioned above wanted to harm me, probably rob me, thankfully he did not have a knife or a gun, club etc., or tried to assail me when he had the element of surprise. He was surprised when he was tossed to the ground, leaving me time to go to those guys in the patrol car, who did nothing, well they drove over to him, but that was it, I watched from where they were, then went to work, following days I looked around for jerks like this guy, never saw him or anyone of the sort again.

My son has a friend who always carries a booklet of 5 dollar gift certificates for Subway. When she's approached, she hands them one.

Met a neighbor on the street and stopped to talk. Some guy came up to him and asked him for money. Neighbor told him: "Hey, I'm working this side of the street; you go on over and work the other side of the street!" The panhandler dutifully went over to the other side of the street.

I used to buy gas at a Walmart station. It was always like a 3 ring circus and not unusual for someone to come up and say they had run out of gas just down the street or where ever and could I give them some money for gas. Don't think I ever contributed to their cause.

Happened a lot. Then I noticed NOT ONE ever had a gas can. Without a gas can, how were they going to get the gas to the car??? Then I got smart and started buying gas somewhere else.

Yes these folks were there in a vehicle and their story seemed true, but you don't know.

Working downtown, I run into all kinds of panhandlers. Some of them really look pathetic. Years ago I had a police officer tell me that many of these "pathetic" looking folks drive downtown in their Cadillacs, change into their "grubbies" and go panhandling. He told me some of them make $60,000/yr all cash.

Don't feel bad, you have to be a good steward of what God has given you. If you want to give, make sure its going to a good place.

As far as driving, you made the right choice. You may have "broken" the law, but you probably saved you and your son from injury and your vehicles from damage.

88-1175,

Nancy is right on the panhandler situation.

Might have been a couple years ago already... but a small city newspaper in MN did a series of investigative reports - they found that indeed, most of the panhandlers had cell phones, plenty of smokes AND had nice cars parked nearby in the mall parking lot. At the end of their so-called "work-day", they hopped in and drove to a nice apartment building or to a decent motel (some stopped at a bar or a restaurant before calling it a day).

As someone else mentioned... we too, try to help folks by donating at church and through legitimate charities. We barely carry any cash at all and if I was in a situation where I had lost my purse and had no checks/money - I'd call the police or a church - NOT approach random strangers asking for money.

Personally i wouldnt even worry about the CDL issue. Sometimes you have to do what you got to do. I really dont even see that as a big problem. You just drove a few miles back home. About the lady, well now days you just never know, its not like it used to be where when someone told you a story like that ,they actually needed just gas to go home.Im really sorry for the lady and the kids and i hope they got home safe. But i wouldnt loose any sleep over it and thats not being cold hearted its just because the times have changed. You and your Son made it home safe thats the main thing.

I always check their hands a real begger has dirty unkemted hands dirt under the finger nails and they look like he has never had a good meal. Them if he smells bad from not having a bath in years he might just be the guy who needs some cash I never give more than I have in change pocket, if he really needs it he will thank you and go on his way. Never give to people in rest stops or gas stations or other places where a lot of people come and go. These are always scam artist making more than you do.

There's a couple of intersections in Carbondale, IL that have the same "homeless" panhandlers there every day year round. They swap places, I guess in an effort to keep folks from realizing they're permanent fixtures. Wife and I happened to be at the local McDonalds and they were all in there together for breakfast, and were planning their strategy for the day. Nice appearing friendly folks, relatively clean cut, probably making more money than they would on minimum wage. I'm surprised the law doesn't crack down on them, but maybe there is no law against what they're doing. I have no problem feeding someone who is hungry, but they are making a business out of it on this street. They might make someone a good employee, that is if you could afford to pay them more than they're presently making. They certainly are prompt and dependable. Never miss a day of "work".

I've been approached many times on the "out of gas, need cash" scam. I must have a kindly face, or look gullible. I did fall for one thing... while getting gas at a truck stop many years ago on the way back from a show this guy approaches and says this fellow in the back just hit the lottery and is giving away $20 bills, wants to share the wealth with all his fellow travellers. Guy was very convincing and I was a bit numb in the head from driving for several hours and I was waiting for the girls to get back from the potty so I locked the truck and went with him. These guys appear from no where and start throwing money and cards around. Turns out he was just recruiting for a three card monty game. I said I didn't have any cash and got out of there quick. I'm a big guy so they probably didn't want to mess with me too much and I was younger and in better shape than any two of them, but I was pretty lucky.

You did the right thing under the circumstances. Don't fret about it. The world is a cruel place sometimes and sometimes you have to bend the law a bit. You're scott free and didn't harm anyone and didn't make anything worse.

Keep your sugar under control and don't listen to your conscience so much. Try not to let other people's problems become your own.

Did you mean to say you put your hand on your protection that she could not see? That was the right thing to do too.

(quoted from post at 05:43:24 08/05/14) well the boy and I went to a tractor pull tonight, hes back, girls not, anyway had a great night, had ended up getting 4 hooks in,what my ears heard,i never watch when tuning(it heightens the sense of sound) the datalogger disputed.so I went with experience and it worked flawless.ordering some new o2 sensers tomorrow.after the pull we stopped at a mcdonalds/gas station, its after midnight,we eat go to the truck, boy goes in the trailer to check the chains.out of nowhere a middle aged woman appears by the truck, she seems very upset, kinda like shes extremely scared,i put my hand she cant see on protection, the door is open too.her story is shes lost her debit card and is traveling with her mother and 3 children and is about out of gas,has about 150 miles to home.i didn"t see her come into the lot,i simply wasn"t paying attention,i lied and told her I didn"t have a debit card, she said ok and walked to her vehicle,a minivan.i did have about 80$ in my pocket.the boy came up got in the driver seat and started the truck, the lady slowly drove by us on my side,i looked down into her van and a old woman holing a young child was the passenger and kids were sleeping in the rear seats, she went out another exit and across the street to other busnisses.b4 we got on the interstate I felt terrible,as we were drivin I fessed up and told the boy I set a bad example for him,he says I was just playin it safe by not reachin in my pocket or getting out in a not well lit area,my conscious is bothering me terribly....second issue, boy is tired, been up 23 hrs, were ten miles from home on a 2lane state route,he asks me if I would drive the rest of the way home,im a diabetic and lost my cdl in 96 cause im insulin dependant, state asked and I didn"t fight it,i didn"t need them at the time.so I told him to pull over,i checked my sugar,it was good,i finished the trip with no problems...my concern,i feel guilty about the lady, and I broke a major driving law...concern 2,while at the pharmacy ,after I gave my cdl up,i see a guy pickin up insulin too,hes wearing a insulin pump exactly like mine,i do a quick sweep of the store looking for the driver, noone,oh hes a state employee driving a highway dept tri-axle by himself.both my docs says its the law, federal, the state says their right but I see other guys shootin up insulin and driving cdl, hows this possible???

You did all the right things. It's a shame, but you can't hardly trust any strangers anymore. It's a Sad time were in.
Our forefathers are rolling over in there graves.

You need to check with your state on the CDL. Requirements have changed.
You should be able to get it back with proper documentation.
Tom

I have an insulin exemption CDL and a medical card. It took me 6 months to get it and then you have to see you dr every 3 months and eye dr every year. You test before you drive and must keep BS between 100 and 300 and keep a log of this. Lots of paper work to DC FMCSA plus sending duplicate medical card and certification to the state. Get on their web site and do some studying. It can be done, I did it and my dr has several with it. Good luck.
