10SI and amp gauge?

So I have hooked up a 10SI GM alternator on my Oliver 88 and I used the three wire method. Works good! My question is that my amp gauge can only read 20 AMPs. Will the alternator damage it over time? Should I put one in that can read more? Thanks

I did my first ever 12 volt alternator conversion (55 amp 10SI) on my Super M a good 35 years ago. At startup it pegs the original (20-0-20) ammeter. It then settles back just to the right of 0 after running couple minutes. It's been doing this 35 years; the old ammeter is still working fine.

I'd not worry about it; leave your ammeter "as is"!

I use the original gauges with alternators on my tractors. Have noticed it will peg them at startup but usually settles down after a few minutes of run time. Have not seemed to damage one yet but it sure could be possible.

I think you will be fine, it should settle down within a couple of minutes of running. My Farmall does the same thing.
