Hydraulic outlet compatibility

Hey, tractor experts. Are all makes of tractors compatible as far as hydraulic hose ends?
Seems like I remember years ago that john Deere was different than some others.

Only tractors newer than [u:32eb4afe28]about 1980 [/u:32eb4afe28]have common hydraulic couplers. ( TX Jim The underlined "about" suit you???? In the next sentence I stated that JD started with the 50 series)

Up until the JD 50 series JD had their own style couplers.

IH had their own too until half way through the 86 series tractors.

Ford used pioneer tips but with different tips/balls on the ends.

AC used pioneer couplers basically since they started with remote hydraulics.

So if you are looking at older equipment than you may need to convert some of the couplers over to Pioneer barrels. I know CIH and JD offer kits to convert the older style couplers over. Just watch as some of the early JD 10 series couplers do not have a kit available to convert them.

Up until the mid 1980s I carried a bucket full of adaptors and hose ends to make things work on different tractors/implements.

I din't know about 2014 models, but all the JDs I
encountered had different connectors. Older
models had different connector schemes. A JD A
has different connectors than late 1950s models.
Older Olivers had screw on connectors. If you look
at dealer's yards most of the equipment such as
round balers and MOCOS have Pioneer fittings which
ar designed to pull apart if the implement comes
loose from the tractor. The fitting on the
tractor has to be fastened in such a way that the
hose fitting can come apart.

I will differ with you on the ACs,they never used Pioneer. They never used a standard coupling until the 8000 series and they were Brunning, which wasn't totally compatible with Pioneers, but with a little lath work could be made to work ok.Case was the first to go with what we call a standard fitting.

(quoted from post at 17:13:31 08/02/14) Only tractors newer than about 1980 have common hydraulic couplers.

Sorry but JD 40 series tractors were built through 1982. Then 50 series with ISO tips/couplers started. I always thought it was odd that JD 2 cyl 20 & 30 series used ISO tips/couplers and the 3010/4010's had a different tip/coupler.

Well the AC dealers around here must have changed them all when they received them as the AC D-17s clear through the XT 190s all had Pioneer couplers around here.

I agree with you and I was pretty heavy in acs in the late 50s in to the 60s and ever thing I ever saw had pioneer or pioneer compatible from the D19 on.

I believe one of the first companies to make hydraulic coupler break-away couplers was Brunning. In 1949-50 is when some of them first appeared on the Minneapolis Molines as a 3 piece coupler, two male ends and a connecting sleeve in the middle. The connecting sleeve had a bracket that fit into a support iron to allow movement. Some of the AC's had the male end on the tractor, male end on the ram and connected with the sleeve. Some place I saw a picture in an AC manual with a strap and chain to hold the bracket. It must not have worked real well for AC as I don't think it was used long. The Brunning couplers were used on MMs until the mid 1960s when Pioneer was getting more popular. They were also used on some of the 4000-5000 Fords.

The WD's and CA's we had had a male fitting on the tractor and on the hose and used a coupler that was female on both ends to connect them. You're right they were Brunning and the Pioneer male fittings would work with the Brunning coupler if they were the ball type as well as I can remember. We ended up changing everything over to Pioneer

Early IH used pioneer. My 560 and 460 had factory
pioneer couplers with the IH logo stamped on them.
The 666, the '78 1086 and the '81 986 have the IH
and I use adapters to make my pioneer male fittings
work.

JD,I will rephrase what I said,I don't know who made the couplings for AC until the 7000s(Brunning)came out.A member of dads family owned a AC dealership for 50 yrs.and we never had a AC with Pioneer compatible fittings until 7000-8000s Brunnings(which still weren't right yet.WE had to convert all before to Pioneers. Even the JDs.
