Should I... Clean this oil breather cap thing?

At least, I believe this is called an oil breather cap? Not sure how it can be working to well, as nasty as it looks. Took the hood off of my WD to take the gas tank off to work on it, and saw this, and figured it needs some work too? Or is this natural?

Natural if you never clean it. Probly was cleaned the last time the oil was changed. :)^D That is when I clean the ones on my tractors as well as change oil filters.

well ya it is normal if it don"t get cleaned, give it a washing in solvent or gas when you change oil.
its a regular maintenance item.

So just soak it in gas until it's clean? No need to do anything else to it, like soak the inside with oil before it goes back on or anything like that?

don't just soak it, swish it around till all the insides are clean of sludge and dirt then can blow it out with air also. don't have to oil it.

Probably would have been a good idea to clean the whole top before
you took it off so the crud didn't fall off an down into the engine.
Not a big deal if none fell off. Clean it up good, put it back on and
then clean the rest if you want too.

Nah, nothing fell in when I took it off, but I concur that the whole engine has a... caked on dirt appearance to it. Will clean this up for sure. Thanks guys.
