I started something today that should have been done ten years ago. Partly because I was ten years younger back then, but mostly because having beef cattle in old dairy facilities never was a good idea.
Dad and I built that barn back in about 68. He got some used corrugated steel when they tore down the old pickle plant. It had tar on one side,so we put that on the inside. 46 years of having cattle in there with all that moisture between the steel and tar had the steel looking like a screen door. The whole configuration of it just didn't work anymore either. That old junk wasn't worth saving,so I put a piece of pipe on the bale spear and just pushed the steel off.
The lean to on the side of the old stanchion barn has to come down too. You can see that to the left in the first picture. I built that in 76,had free stalls in it until we put in more stanchions, then I used it for calves. Those steers have pretty much destroyed it. The insurance company cancelled the coverage on the whole mess a year ago,so something had to happen.
I'm gonna replace the whole works with something more suitable. Just in time to get out of the cattle business. lol
