Is galvinized wire possionious?

Need to make some hotdog/marshmelow roasting sticks and was thinking about using some #9 galvinzed wire to make them but don't want to kill anybody. Ive herd that when you weld it that the smoke is.

Not going to say it's poisonous when heated in a fire, vs welded, but if nothing else the zinc in the galvanizing will definitely leave a bad taste in the food. The best thing to do would be to find some stainless steel TIG rod and make the items your wanting from it. That way it will be rust free, even when burned, and won't impart any taste to the food.

I don't think I would use it. If used properly it
would not get hot enough to burn the
galvanizing...

"If" used properly!

But my concern would be flaking off and getting in
the food and swallowed! Not good!

I agree with Wayne, stainless would be best. You
can probably but roasting wires at Walmart or
similar stores.

Stainless TIG rod would be best. 316 stainless is considered food grade. A welding supply or even a shop that does stainless may sell you a couple rods so you don't have to buy a 10lb. sleeve.

I made some out of high tensile fence wire 25 years ago or more. No one had ever gotten sick or complained about their hot dog tasting funny.

I just uses some old wooden handles I had. I bored a small hole in the end and stuck the wire in the hole with about six inches hanging out.

I used the high tensile because it was smaller and the dogs slide on it easier. Also the high tensile wire is smoother than #9 wire.

Something to be aware of when cooking with any sort of plated steel: Cadmium is highly toxic. Since it's hard to tell if something is plated with cadmium or something else, it's best to keep all plated metals away from food. People have been poisoned by using old refrigerator shelves as barbecue grills.

Find a campaign sign of a candidate you do not like and use the wire from the back of his lawn sign. You may even ask him for a sign to put in your yard and throw the sign away and use the wire. If you are really a nice guy you may wait until after election and get them more honorably

Well, campfires burn at 250 degrees and galvanizing takes place at 860 degrees so you have no worries, but I am too old to switch over from the branch of a bush myself.

Why not just hit a department store, outdoor store, or hardware store and get some weenie/marshmallow roasting forks from the camping department? They're the right kind of material and a lot less likely to be contaminated with anything.

The odds of you having the right stainless TIG wire on hand are slim. If you gotta make a trip to the welding supply it's probably closer to go to one of those other places and get the real deal.

Why not just use old wire coat-hangers. I've used
coat-hangers that way for over 60 years; you just
have to remove the paint with some coarse Steel Wool
where ever the wire is going to be in contact with
food.
