Visit the Union Pacific rail switch yard in North Platte. Go up in the tower. There may be 700 engines and up to 15,000 cars in the yard. Takes an hour or so.

Also in North Platte is Scout's Rest (Buffalo Bill's ranch house) and right before you get to it the Lincoln County Historical Museum. There's Cody Trading Post at the insterate, but they admit they are just a tourist trap. There's some stuff to see in Cheyenne, too. And the Lincoln highway memorial at the top of the hill at Laramie. Panorama point (highest point in Nebraska) is not far from the point where Colorado, Wyoming, and Kansas come together. Always stopped at the Fort Fred Steele rest area in the truck, it's fully solar powered. Never could go visit the old fort site in the truck though.

I've always wanted to grab one of the dirt roads off the interstate up there and see what it looks like at the other end.

You'll be passing a couple hours south of Allen.

Pioneer Village at Minden is just a little south of I-80. Lots of vehicles of all types. It is south of Kearney. Lake McConaughy, 10 minutes north of Ogallala, huge reservoir on the Platte River. Lexington, has an interesting Military vehicle museum, and its right on the exit ramp. Tractor testing museum in Lincoln. Get the free Things to See map at a rest stop. The UPRR has a visitors tower there at North Platte, and the RR yard is one of the largest in the world.

I agree with the rest. This is in the east instead of the west, but there is a SAC museum at the 426 mile marker on the Ashland exit that's well worth the time.

It has a little bit of everything on display up to and including a B-52, SR-71 Blackbird, U-2, etc. And it's all indoors.
