Just read on Yahoo news that James Garner died last night and was 86 YO.

I can remember watching countless episodes of The Rockford Files at my grandparents house in the 70s. I am not old enough to remember the Maverick TV show.

I grew up watching Maverick with Bart, Brett, and Beau. We now watch the Rockford Files near every night on DVD. He seemed like one of the good guys with a real life behind his screen image. Korean war vet too.

One of my favorite actors from Maverick to the movie with Sally Fields where he played a pharmacist/drugstore owner. I didn't realize he was that old.

Larry

My mother loved his Bret Maverick character. I was named after that character. I think Mom hoped I'd grow up to look like James Garner, instead she got Homer Simpson.....

RIP Mr Garner, I enjoyed your shows. Absolutely love "Support Your Local Sheriff".

[One of the good guys for sure. Not many left in gollywood.

Guys, If My memory serves He was the original male Voice of "Beef! "It whats for dinner" after the $1.00 check off was established in the Mid 80s.
Later,
John A.

Good guy, I recollect reading he won the Silver Star in Korea...not like our current batch of "hollywood talent" RIP

I met him one time on a movie location. Very nice guy acted like one of the crew. Not stuck up like some I have met.

2 Purple Hearts, one for friendly fire in the buttocks! No Silver Star I can find.

'The Rockford Files' is one of my favorites. I always liked the trailer he lived in. Also, he once shot down a Cessna 210 with a 2 inch barreled hand gun. It was flying fairly low!
Gretchen Corbett as 'Beth Davenport'. Noah Beery as 'Rocky" A well written and acted show. Garner played the character just right.

I still love the Rockford Files. As someone else has mentioned, it was a very well written show, and he really made it the great show that it was. I read somewhere that he actually did all the stunt driving too.

Oh yeah, the Firebird, I loved it and the little printing press that he kept in the glove box to make one-off business cards. Funny, I have never seen a printing press like that for sale! I think he (Garner) was a pretty good wheel man. They did a lot reverse 180 degree turns etc. with that car. Wonder how many they went through?

He will be missed! Garner was not only a great actor, but he was also a serious auto racer back in the 60"s and 70"s. I remember reading about his exploits in Hot Rod Magazine.

From what I ever saw or read, Garner was a nice, good guy, which is a compliment I don"t think I could say about a lot of Hollywood people.
