hyd. on a 2940 john deere will not work correct

on a john deere 2940, when the hyd's get hot, the steering, and the lift quits about 20 -30 min. after you start the tractor. any suggestions, thanks

A neighbor had a hydraulic problem with his 2940.

There are internal hydraulic lines held in place with steel clamps. One of thess clamps loosened and over time vibration wore a pin hole into the line. Repair required splitting the tractor.

Apparently, this is not uncommon with this model.

Bought a 2840 years ago that would chatter and do that after the fluids got hot. Luckily for me, new filter/fluid and screen cleaning took care of it.

We need more info.
If equipped with a loader and if the valve is open Center or a failing closed Center . She will heat up, loose steering etc.
As most service occurs at failure instead of according to the operators manual. The transmission filter will plug and then the divert valve in the transmission will cycle. This "water hammers" the pipe work and fails fittings .
In fact most operators are unaware of the screen and both filters.
Either the power steering valve or the rockshaft sealwill wear out over 35 years or so and how many thousand operations.
Wrong connections of loaders or any other high flow hydraulic equipment will cause heating.
I though the oil cooler fins were hosed clean on my tractor . After having the everything apart for cooling system service and the oil cooler was visible . The cooler was still half plugged with oily mud.
Billy Bob Bubba brand oil can cause problems too.
Have you put a pressure gauge on the low pressure and high pressure hydraulic systems?

How long since hyd filter was changed and sump screen(parts key 30) checked/cleaned? Look inside hyd filler hole with 3 pt raised engine running for spraying hyd oil.

Lets see what the lube pressure is after checking the oil levels, filters/screen and oil level.

After checking the oil level the first step I'd take is to do a pressure/FLOW test on the charge pump. You want to make sure that the charge pump delivers specified pressure at rated flow... if it doesn't then you can start by looking at the suction strainers/filters and advancing into bigger issues like cracked or broken lines in the transmission. If it does make specified flow then you need to pressure/flow test the main pump in isolation of the remainder of the system to see if it's up to spec... and if it isn't... deal with that. If is... then go hunting for the high pressure leak in the back end. Those tractors were WELL KNOWN for developing high pressure leaks and that both deprives you of available flow and generates a massive amount of heat. Given what you describe... that it gets so hot it goes to chattering and not working in half an hour... I would say you have a fairly substantial high pressure leak.

Look at the boss just above the hyd filter. If there isn't a tapped hole with a socket screw in it the pipe inside hasn't been updated and will probably need to be.
