Artesian well question

Where I am located my well will flow water (even without the pump running)
Today a buddy of mine who is a plumber came over and we put a shutoff valve before the well tank and put in a new pressure switch too.

Question:
What causes the water to come 100 feet up a 1 inch diameter line and flow without the pump running? I just do not understand how this can happen. With my house water system reading near zero on the gauge I still get about 1 gallon per minute of water flowing.

Well somewhere there's a column of water standing a little higher than your outlet in your house. A pound of pressure is'nt much so water column wouldn't have to be very high.

In western Minnesota is the Red River Valley. It is flat as a pancake and there are artesian wells all over on farms etc. there. A lot of times there is a slough where all the excess water goes. I stayed every summer for 6 or 7 years at my Uncle's farm and it was nice cool water and quenched your thirst.

They basically like a spring. We had one in NC Iowa in our feed lot. It came in handy when it turned -32 and froze the water lines to the livestock. Quite a few in Goldfield.

ground water actually follows the contours of the ground surface, so water at the top of a hill causes pressure on the water at the bottom of a hill, hence a spring. The porosity of the soil (or resistance) will dictate the flow rate.

I live in Arkansas. Some small mountains in the area. I always thought the aretesian wells were in a lower area. Had a guy drilling a well for me. Got to talking about artesian wells. Well driller said there were artesian wells on the tops of the mountains around here.

A neighbor has an artesian well. His house is about the same elevation as my springs, 300' lower than my house.

No unpumped water on top of this mountain, why I dragged home a windmill.

I have a 25 gal/min drilled artesian well.
It'll still flow over 10' above the ground surface,.it'll pressure up to 30+ PSi.

The land around here is slightly rolling,..no hills for many many miles every direction.

Zephyrhills spring in Florida. A massive flow from a spring and the land is very flat and only maybe 20' above sea level.
