A/C problems

Cih 8820 windrower that was previously converted to 134 had a bad expansion valve. Replaced valve and went to pull a vacuum. The high and low side hookups are on the back of the compressor side by side. Had to get a special fitting to hook guages up. Any way either the couplers are bad or something is messed up cause it will not pull the whole system down. Just the lines from the guages to the compressor. Any thoughts

Were the compressor fittings previously converted to R-134A fittings (as they should have been when the system was converted to R-134A)? Sometimes, when that is done, the Scrader valve cores have to be taken out of the original R-12 fittings AHEAD of the adapters to allow gas flow. (Depending upon the exact adapters used.

On the other hand, you mention adapters on the gauges. Are you using R-12 gauges with adapters to match the R-134A fittings on the compressor?

ANYHOW, it seems you must have some mis-match of fittings/adapters.

Your adapters may not be depressing the valve core in the R134A adapters on the system. You might have to back out the valve cores a bit to pull a vacuum, then tighten them back up once you've filled the system.
