Hay around Long Island N.Y .

A friend has 2 horses on Long Island and is paying a fortune for it there . Is there someplace in N.J. or Pa. that she could buy right from a farmer ? She admires my tractors ...

Any way they get it the freight is going to break them, unless they find hay that was grown on Long Island it has to be trucked through New York City. If a group of them got together and form a hay COOP, they could buy a full truck load of hay and split it among themselves. Another alternative maybe, friends of ours who kept horses in Suburban Chicago used to get hay from a farmer that had a "Hay route" He was up in Wisconsin and had gathered enough customers that he would run a load of hay down into the area about once a week and unload it at each customer's barn.

We have a hay dealer about 30m west of me on the Rt20 coridor. His trucks go down by our house every night like clock work. Don't have to even look out the window, cause the Jake on his trucks are distinctive. Just set back and say "there goes Walter" Been going on for years.
If a person lives on LI, and has horses, EXPECT to pay for hay.
I would tell her to get rid of the horses, (hay burners), and grow a garden.

If you were to tell my wife to get rid of her horses and grow a garden, I would prefer you do it when I'm not home. I suppose she's capable of strong language and swinging a frying pan, but I don't want to be around to see it.

Well, I hear you, but unless you are Amish or have a champion horse, they are a financial burdon.
My wife has a PIA little dog, that is a food burner also. Life goes on LOL.

Loan her your truck and trailer to pick it up from me in NH. $5.00 for 45lbs. picked up in the field. $.25 discount for over 400.

Problem is no one wants to truck on long island. Its a pain in the neck and if guys can find loads that dont go on the island they will take those.

I'll have to check that out. I think one of the issues is getting through traffic, I worked in that area for many years and that was the worst, in and around the throgs neck and or whitestone bridge, as well as I-95/cross bronx expressway, could be 3am and you'll have a traffic jam, but if you are trying to sell your goods I suppose..... I've hauled trusses into long island, out of the local lumber yard here, and that was in the mid-late 80's, no fun then. I do recall a lot of hay moving that direction though, straight trucks built for small bales, as well as the trailer loads.

If they can afford to live on Long Island, and afford to have horses there, I wouldn't feel too sorry for them or spend too much time trying to help them save $50 on hay. They need to pay up and pay dear for it. The poor guy baling and delivering the hay has plenty of expenses to get the product to them. They need to help him make a living.
