I've got potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage. cukes, watermelon, and sweet corn in but have a little extra space. Just was wondering what I could try this late. I know peas and beans can go for a while but was wondering about beets or carrots. We are moderated by Lake Ontario and usually do not see frost before October. Can I try another batch of cabbage if I can get plants?

You can plant cabbage from seed this late. It will take some frost. 75 days will make decent heads on some varieties.

I plan to put in some parsnips, carrots, beets, and maybe shell beans when I pull my garlic in another week or so.

I don"t have the influence of the lake, so I may run out of time - but for a few bucks its not a bad gamble.

Beets and carrots will be fine. Parsnips probably take too long to mature. Cabbage, broccoli, etc. will also work.

Cabbage will do well this late, we are actually just finishing up with this years planting of cabbage for a late October harvest, plant this late most every year, about 40 acres total for fresh market and winter storage, in WI. frost wont hurt it at all but a solid freeze will turn the inside of the cabbage to mush.
