610 Long oil problem

I overhauled my 610 Long engine, and now quite often the oil pump looses prime. I have to remove the oil filter and pour oil in the pump outlet chamber. Where did I go wrong?

I would bet that the suction tube is leaking air some where. I have had tubes leak at the oil pump and they will lose prime.

My dad's Long 560 does the same thing. I have had to remove the oil filter and pour oil in it for years. I was thinking of replacing the oil pump, but was told it probably wouldn't help. I think I tried tighening the suction tube fittings. I think it's mostly a bad design. Let me know if you solve the problem.

I did put a new gasket, when rebuilding the engine, between the pickup tube and the pump. I did not find a gasket for the pump to engine. Thought may it was not necessary. Do not remember any foot valve in the pickup tube. Thought about fabricating one. It would be a major job to remove the oil pump to install a gasket to the block.
