my 49 john deere MT will shut off when I turn the
switch from charge to lights and charge whats wrong

Use a volt meter but your wire going to the coil is on the wrong terinal.

If it started doing that when nothing was changed the switch is bad. You can take it apart and clean the contacts or just replace it. Here's a pic of the switch wiring.
My MT started doing the same thing. figured it was the switch and I had noting to loose by taking it apart. You have to pry the tabs open but once that is done the back, with terminals comes off and you can clean contacts inside. Mine worked great after cleaning inside contacts.
