adjusting volage regulater

Got a JD A ampmeter gauge goes as hi as 15 depending on rpms Is there a way to make it not charge as much. It will do this even if batteries were on the charger

15 amps is not very high at all. A tractor generator is capable of infinity voltage (high output) but your battery charger is only capable of putting out a set amount. I would not worry about 15 amps.

My other A will charge alot in the begining but backs down after awhile . I have not run it enough to see if will boil the batteries out

Need to check the battery voltage. If it's going over about 14 volts, and still charging 15 amps, something is wrong. Probably bad regulator or needs adjusting.

It should drop to just above zero within a few minutes after startup, and kind of bounce around there (as the regulator kicks in and out). If the amperage goes up or down with RPMs, and never drops back, you've probably got a bad regulator. To test, take the regulator out of the circuit by grounding the Field (either at the generator or the regulator), and put a jumper wire between the Bat and Gen (or Arm) terminals on the regulator- if the ammeter just goes higher and lower based on RPMs, the regulator is not working.

If the battery is good and the genny and Voltage Regulator, Id expect it to charge at the 15 to 20 amp range right after start up, but then if lights aren't on Id expect it to drop to 3 to less then 10 maps subject to RPM and loads.

If you put a voltmeter on the battery Id expect a good battery to read 12.6 volts sitting but at fast RPM with a good genny and VR maybe rise to at least to 13 up to around 14 or so subject to RPM and battery and charging system.

If it stays at a constant 15 amps ALL THE TIME theres a possibility the battery may overcharge and outgas excessively which can damage the battery. It sounds like the VR may be bad or mis adjusted which can be fixable, but thats a bit hard to describe over the net absent the actual genny and VR and all their specs and data.

Id start with a voltmeter on the battery and if voltage doesnt (after a long time at fast RPM) rise to much over 13 to 14 I wouldn't worry that much but if it goes to 14+ to near 15 and stays there constantly, Id bet its outgassing and will overcharge and eventually ruin the battery.

I went to automotive trade school in early sixties. we were taught how to clean up contacts & adjust VR's using SUN/ALLEN equip. still remember how temp & installing the cover changed settings. several guys flunked the test because they would get everything spot on, slap on cover & not recheck. sure wish I had some more of those old units now!

FIT posted a link to the original Delco service manuals for both type regulators years ago. Don't know if the search feature go's back that far but it's worth a try.
