Gas struts on tool box

I purchased the DeeZee tool box on truck in 2007. This winter was very cold, which may have nothing to do with anything, but over the winter the gas struts on crossover box lost their poop.

The OEM struts are 15 inches and 40#. For the same price I can get 50#. Kicking around the idea of getting stronger ones hoping they will last longer. Any ideas? Is there a strut that is a spring only that will last longer? I'll bet that my struts lost a little gas, because with warmer temps, they can just about hold the lid open. In the winter no way.

I can get a pair of 15 inchers for $30, shipping included. Anyone have a cheaper source?

Thanks,
George

I don't think their strength would have anything to do with the life of the lift spring. I'd just go with the same weight rating and be done.

Last winter I replaced the gas springs on my topper's back window. Amazon was the lowest cost source and they have worked well so far. The side doors on the same topper use regular springs that are over sized. As you open the doors the door jerks you arm up pretty fast and they always bang hard against their stops. I'd stay with the original size springs.

Cheaper? Sure, George, just lift the lid & clamp a vice-grip on the rod. Remove to lower. See done many times.

Jessie, I'm using vice grips now. Have grips on each
side of box. I sometimes have to go to the other
side of truck to remove grips. If only I could get
them to release when I push down on lid.
