Off topic car buying

I try not to do off topics but looking for other cases/opinions.

Decided to purchase a new car. We already had financing and decided to not trade.

When agreeed we went to the "finance" office to fill out paperwork, I noticed my social sec number was already filled in on the title application.

I asked the finance person how he got it and he said it was already in their system and that i must have applied for something in the past.

The problem is I've never looked at a car or bought a car from these guys and have never applied for anything online.

Has anyone run accross this? I'm freezeing my credit reports just incase someone else (id thief) has recently done something. (nothing on the reports as of today so it would be very recent).

I believe fed law prohibits anyone obtaining my SS # without me giving it to them. There are also laws that they are not allowed to pull a credit report without a good reason (i never entertained getting credit there). I've asked them to explain this. No reply yet.

if their 'system' includes any bank you've done business with in the past its in there, also if their business has a branch buisiness that involves credic cards they have it, and some other financial places too, these places are about all innerconnected now,

If the purchase will be financed I believe the lien has to appear on the title, so I assume you told them who will hold it and they got the info from there.

The days of one's SSN being used only for SS information are long gone.

If it bothers you, inform the dealer and buy your car elsewhere.

It could be that dealer is part of a larger network that shares customers' info. Or your financing is through a company with which you've previously done business (e.g. Ally, formerly GMAC).

Ever read those disclosure statements the banks and credit card companies send you every year?

you're right it goes on the title

BUT it was filled in before I got to the Finance guy.

need to dig a bit more.

I tought the federal privacy laws did not allow the sharing of SS numbers without direct consent.

I'd bet the single most ignored law in the US is the one that specifically states a SSN will not be used for identification purposes.
