140 Farmall

I have a 140 Farmall that we cultivate with. It will run really good for about 30-45 minutes then it starts coughing/sputtering. It will go about 5 feet then dies. If I choke it some, it will go about 10 feet before it dies. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

Sounds to me like you may be losing spark.
Have you checked the spark at the plugs right after it dies?
Does it have a distributor or a magneto ignition?

at moment of death, check spark.. just because it is easy. My guess is it will have good spark.

then you move on to fuel. sounds like classic fuel starvation...

We took the generator off and put a single wire alternator on it 5 years ago. Is it possible the 10% ethanol gas is bothering the system?

I don't have any trouble running them on 10%.
Storage is another consideration for another day. :)
The generator or alternator won't matter either.
That is in the charging circuit not the ignition circuit,
so it will run even if those weren't there.
A magneto will run forever without them, a distributor until
the battery goes dead. Is your battery dead when it quits?

It's quick and easy to check the spark, if good, check fuel flow.
The fact that choke helps makes me think a fuel issue, but
normally when mine have fuel issues they don't run 45 minutes.

Try running with the fuel cap loose and see if symptoms persist. If the vent in the fuel cap is plugged, use of fuel in the tank will create a vacuum so fuel stops being delivered. And 30 minutes or so seems about the right amount of time for that to occur.

Have you checked to see if there is something floating around in bottom of tank that could be plugging fuel out let of tank?

The moment it dies check spark and make sure it is a good blue/white and will jump a 1/4 inch gap. Next check that you have good fuel flow out the carb drain plug. My BA which is a tractor I built from junk would do that and I found it had some tree leaves in the tank that would close off the fuel supply. It would die and then after say 2 or 3 minutes start right back up

My Farmall Super A was kind of doing the same thing recently. I changed the plugs, points, rotor, condenser, and fuel line. It still wasn't running right.
So I did two things at the same time. I changed the coil, and drilled a hole in the gas cap. Whatever it was solved the problem. Good luck!

You use to be able to get a NEW updated safer gas cap for them FREE.. I got them for my Farmalls and like them... I have in info some were if y'all are interested...

It may not be his issue but electronic ignition is the best thing you can do to a Farmall... They also suffer from ignition switch issues and can be hard to catch if you run a amp meter... The bad is a new switch may give the same issue BTDT.... If you have a voltmeter it will tell the tell... No Doubt...

Yes check for something floating around in the gas tank including small amounts of water at the bottom of the tank.
If you choke it and it runs a bit longer leaves out the ignition system, it's a fuel problem.
