OT- Woods 5140 zero turn issue with hills

Picked up an older Woods 5140 Mow'N Machine. Runs well but slows going up an incline, if I let back on the drive levers it climbs up slow but will make it, does well on flat surfaces, engine seems strong and does not bog down. One belt runs both pumps and the machine pulls evenly, the belt looks old and the inner pulley surfaces that contacts the belt looks shiny - glazed on the pumps and engine. I have a new belt on order but can I lightly scuff the pulleys to remove the glaze? Also, should I replace the spring on the belt tensioner, seems like I can slack the belt fairly easy by hand when stopped but not sure how tight it should be? Hydro fluid was replaced and filters cleaned but had no effect. I read Grasshopper had and issue with the tensioner spring but not sure if this mower was made by them or not.

Spring and belt should do it. Scuffing up the pulleys might help, might be a lot of effort, for a small result, if you don't replace the the spring.

Yes like DiyDave said main drive belt to the hydros is glazed over. I have a 5140 also and had the exact same symptons you're having. Replaced the drive belt and scuffed up the hydro pulleys with some emery paper and it worked fine. Put a green belt on, not a black belt.

Thanks guys. I'll research the belt I ordered, lightly scuff the pulleys and try to find the spring, I believe the belt they're sending me is a Dayco GPL kevlar/aramid cord v-belt made for lawn, farm and industrial use.
John B., do you remember the brand of the green belt you used?
Thanks again.

Just wanted to update in case anyone comes across this topic. You guys nailed it, scuffed the pulleys and replaced the belt which was badly glazed, this thing really is a mow'n machine. Takes hills with no issues. Used the Dayco kevlar belt, didn't need to replace the spring as the tension is adjustable via threaded shaft underneath.

Thank again guys!
