Hi All,

I've got an alfalfa field that has just about played out and the cheat grass is taking over. It's a clay based soil.

I want to disc it anddrill broam or timothy into this alfalfa after I get the hay off this season. Anyone ever done this and had success?

I have done that many times, early July we usually get some rain to get the grass started. No rain it won't make it. Kentucky weather is not the same as NE. A no till drill may be a better choice a disc just tends to dry the soil.

after 4 years I started putting about 5lbs of ttimothy blended into the fertilizer a and spread in the early spring. Agter 2 years I still had some grasses comin so I set the disc pretty straight and disced both ways, then used my drill to put 10 lbs of timothy in it. Worked good and the thick groth of timothy pretty well chocked out mot of the grass. Still have a few areas of cheat though in the mix.

A few ounces of Select herbicide should smoke that cheat (downy brome). At least then you'll have a poor stand of grass in your poor stand of Alfalfa :)

(quoted from post at 09:19:51 06/28/14) I have to tear out this cheat grass is why I'm gonna disk it.

oundup it and no till drill it.

I usually seed a alfalfa grass mix,..where the alfalfa peters out the grass comes in which gives a guy a couple more years decent hay.
I get about 8-10 years out of a hay field before reseeding.

Select is labeled for alfalfa... It is a selective grass herbicide. The necessary adjuvants might ding the leaves a little bit but the Select has no activity on Alfalfa.

How in the heck have you kept the grass out of your alfalfa in the past? Poast and Select have been widely used on legumes for grass control longer than I've been on this spinning globe.

Allen, its off label, and a person can get in trouble if Monsanto figures out what you did, but... After you take a cutting off, run over it with about 10 oz of Roundup. Won't ding the alfalfa much, and will smoke the Cheat/Downy Brome/Japanese Brome.
Like I say, its off label, and a person can get in trouble custom doing it.
Select is way to expensive, in my opinion. You might put points on your field cultivator, and clean out the cheat that way too. I think you would like the response better then the disc.
