I took in a pickup load(3500 lb) heavy scrap iron to my local scrap yard today., all welding scrap and broke parts, no oversized pieces either,..had to unload it myself to boot
I got only $90 for the lot,it barely paid for the fuel for the trip
Rather dismal compared to new steel.
I feel i got robbed . :(

Their pricing
scrap steel $55/metric ton.(smaller than 5' long and 2'wide)
clean Aluminum 40 cent a lb
clean copper $1.20/lb
clean brass 1.25/lb
vehicles $30/ton

What are you guys getting?

You've been robbed. I'd go back and tell them to load you with 3500lbs. of similar scrap, refund their money and take the scrap to another yard.

I agree. Vehicles here have not been under 200 a ton in 6-7 years. In fact other than tin, no steel has been under 200 a ton.

Did you have a bad odor on you or did they use a telescope to see you coming. We can get that much for 15 batteries , our short steel is 270.oo and cars 240.00 Wish i was running a yard near you. I always ask in side before i hit the scales, to little ,,,,,,,, Good BYE.

Carlyle - Car batteries around here are going for $11.00 each.

Some people around here are 'bolting' their car hoods down! Also, many are waking up and go out to start their cars only to hear a loud roar. They look under their car to find the catalytic converter has been cut off.

BTDT! and I live in a very rural area.

You're getting the "only game in town" treatment. You're at the end of the world; No competition, they screw you, and whatta ya gonna do, haul it a thousand miles to the next closest place? Has this outfit ever paid a competitive price?

Hi
There was a yard up here close to me did that, they figured the next yard up was to far for guys to go, plus dot and cops were real good at issuing tickets on road to other yard. so guys wouldn"t go there, $100 of scrap $200 ticket taking it in!.

Now we have outfits from 100 miles away coming and picking up. plus paying more than take in from the other guys. Now the secrets out the guys were robbing us blind. if they want to stay in business, they are paying more now, to compete with the mobile guys from outta town.

a problem is that this yard is the only one in a 50 mile radius,..the next yard is a 300 ml round trip.
I am also 7-800 ml north of the border..

Anything a magnet will stick to, unprepared, 185.00 a ton.(it has go down, was 200.00) North MO

My neighbor is cleaning up his farm now. He is scrapping everything. Lots of pure junk. He is getting unprepared price of $165/ton here in Southern Minnesota.

BTW,..the scrapyard i took my scrap to was bought by Tervita corporation 2 years ago

Another reason that living in a place with none of the Big outfits ain't what it cracked up to be.
Small town stores and outfits like you dealt with
will screw you big time if they know there is no other place for you to go.We have a couple large scrap operations within 100 miles it keeps the smaller outfits close to me paying top $$$.Yea and we have a couple dozen Walmarts in a 50 mile radius keeps prices down so the locals can't charge sky high prices.

(quoted from post at 17:51:56 06/27/14) Here's what they're paying right up the road from me.
Fair Salvage
ow!
The highest price i ever saw up in my neck of the woods here was $125 per metric tonne for prepared mixed steel about 3-4 years ago.

I'm fairly certain it doesn't cost this scrap yard
anything to move the scrap they buy to a larger
buyer a bazillion miles away after all the big
trucks you see running up and down the roads don't
charge anything they just do it for fun.

Been hauling two load a day the last few days. Cut up an old road grader. 8 ton so far. changes hourly 170-210 a ton. Have a whole lot of 1 1/2 new angle iron, well keep some but have to clean up because I am selling the ranch.

You're not alone - I checked the price before seeding, $40/ton for old machinery, etc. This scrap yard is right next to a steel plant that melts it down. Sucks compared to what we see the Americans getting but if you want a clean place that's the deal.

I hauled in a nasty load last Friday. Plastic in it, you name it. I
got $150 a ton. I was fairly pleased since I just chucked stuff in
there.

Yes we get that you can't do it for fun. But if it's anything like some of the guys round here, they own the big shiny house the 3 or 4 high end cars, boat, skidoo and shiny snowmobiles, and are always on a holiday with the wife, if you want to talk to the boss. we are paying for all that. being cheap to your customers and flashing this stuff round don't go so well round here. they call it greed as it probably don't cost $100 a ton to move scrap, with the size loads they take round here and the distance.
if some guys pay $180 a ton and they truck it to market, what they gettin on top, they ain't doing it for fun either are they?.

Canada..30 ton scrap to a load x $55/ton =$1650.
US 30 ton scrap to a load x $180/ton makes $5300.
Ye telling me it cost here in Canada $3650 more to move it 350 ml to a smelter than in the US( never mind the Dollar exchange of 10 % in your favor)

(quoted from post at 20:56:28 06/27/14) All I will say is this. I do not scrap out anything unless I am hard up for $$ I hate to see it go to China to be turned in to weapons
eez old,..if i had kept all the scrap i accumulated over the years i could've started my own scrap yard by now

Well I have 34 years of scrap on my place and it will stay here till I need some $$ or it will be used to repair things I work on. The son need to replace the bumper on his truck so we pulled some scrap iron out and made him a front and rear bump that will almost take out a tank and sure as heck will take out any car made now days

elieve me, the scrap i sell ain't worth using for anything but the smelter.

I keep the useful stuff like plate, flat bar, angle, and round stock for repairs and building things.

I like a clean yard

I was getting $250 a ton for scrap cars and tractors
two years ago in central NY. I was going to take a
load this week but they are only paying $180. For
that - it's not worth the trip to me.

I'm moving the shop so scrapping anything that hasn't been used in years AND I don't want to move. Last week's ticket:
mixed steel - 0.09 $/lb
Iron - 0.10 $/lb
Stainless steel - 0.30 $/lb
lead acid batteries - 10 $ each
#2 copper - 2.40 $/lb
Light Cu [sheet] - 2.30 $/lb
Al cans - 0.48 $/lb
Electric motor - 0.15 $/lb

Batteries are $25/100# here

$200/ton for heavy iron, a touch less for old fence/tin/ similar crap.

I feel like I get robbed going across the scale. One of these times I am going to weigh my load as it goes on the truck.

Just took load in this morning, Cedar Rapids Iowa
Aluminum Rims 57 cents pound 121 lbs
mixed load junk (tin) 2360 lbs $165 ton $194.70

could have sorted better but didn"t want to make several loads

My scrap iron pile is over by my shop. This time of year most of it is hard to see due to the trees and weeds. Shoot there is part of 2 back hoes in that pile some place I know I saw them at one time

If I would take appliances to my scrap yard i would get charged a $100 disposal fee and they don't accept any fence wire or wire mess even if it is neatly rolled up or bundled.
For those items i have to go to the community land fill and they charge a fee as well.

That is still [b:2e63fe1707]3 times[/b:2e63fe1707] what i got,....I would be happy :D

Hauled a combine head whole a couple weeks ago.
Graded Unprepared Shear (as expected) Price was
$190 a ton. Down from the $240 a ton that was
listed in my Jan pricing letter. Course scrap is
usually higher in winter.

In this area they will take most any thing. But if it has or did have freon you have to cut the lines so they know it no long has any. If it had a gas tank you have to cut a big hole in the tank or remove it and most you have to have a title for

Up here at the land fill any fridge freezer or ac unit that had freon in it must come with a signed certificate from the dealer or repair facility that the freon was properly removed before they accept it.
I just take them apart and chuck it in the scrap pile,..F*** the freon.

No title is needed for vehicles taken to the scrap yard

Here in Missouri the reason for a title is to many cars get pulled from the side of the road that broke down and then sold for scrap. Only way you can get by with out a title is if the car is so far gone they know it is junk

I towed the old IH46 baler to the used tractor/eqpt guy and he gave me $300 for it. I think it weighed about 2500 lbs. I was tired of working on it since the plunger sausaged on it last fall.
