white 125 workhorse electrical gauge problems

I have a white 125 workhorse tractor with two gauges, temp and fuel not working.

I have power to all gauges and when I ground the sending wire the gauges peg out to the right. I have power to both the temp sensor and fuel connection ie float, but not sure of voltage.

the power to the gauges starts with voltage gauge and it works fine, then it moves on to fuel temp and oil p. I have traced the grounds down and that doesn't seem to be the issue.

i have traced the sending wire to the plug just in front of the cab, when I ground the fuel & temp at the plug I get slight movement on the gauge, but it doesn't peg out and it does the same thing at the temp. sensor.

Does anyone have any advice on what else I can do/check?

Sounds like you're on the right track to
troubleshoot them. It must have something to do
with a bad ground since 2 gauges are giving the
same symptom. You've already proven the gauges are
working and getting power with the previous tests.

When you ground the wires at the plug in front of
the cab, what are you grounding to?

Try checking voltage between the known good ground
under the dash, and the engine and the gas tank sender, see if there is a
reading. Anything other than 0v indicates a bad
ground.

I want to clarify, test the ground with the gauges connected, the ignition on.

You're testing between the known good ground at the gauge, and the engine block (which the temp sender is screwed into) and the fuel sender base (not the terminal).

I grounded to the frame. Is that not a good idea? I will check the voltage tomorrow. I only checked with a test light today and I had a dim light to both the temp sensor and fuel gauge area, same as at the plug in front of the cab. I was thinking the problem is in front of the plug, because the gauge didn't peg out, but not sure if it should.

Oil pressure wasn't working either, but I found where a rat had chewed a wire into in front of the plug foreword of the cab.

one reason I don't think it's the ground is the voltage gauge is where the ground wire starts (connected the ground lug)then all the other gauges are connected or jumped from one gauge to the next and the first gauge and last work out of the four.

Yes, the gauge should peg out when the sender wire is grounded. That's how the gauge works, it reads the resistance to ground. Inside the sending unit is a variable resistor between the terminal and the case of the unit which is grounded. Less resistance, high reading, more resistance, lower reading.

What you want is for everything to be well grounded, the engine, frame, cab, etc. Usually there are numerous ground wires, especially where there are rubber mounts. If you can't find a ground wire, make one, can't hurt to have extras.

Examine the wire harness carefully, especially where it was chewed. The ground could be broken or the other wires could have shorted and burned the ground into.

If I understand you correctly the gauges peg to the right when you ground the sending terminal at the gauge but not when you ground the wire at the other end? If that is the case either there is a problem with the wires or connections or you are not getting a good ground at the sender end of the wires.

I appreciate everyones help, but im still having the same issue. The temp. gauge pegs out when grounded at the gauge and at the sending wire/sensor so im thinking its not the gauge or the wiring. Like I was saying before this is a 4 gauge cluster and the first and last gauge are working, they share the same hot and ground wires so if it were a ground issue why would the other two work? I did check the voltage at ea. gauge oil pressure 7.78, temp. 8.9, fuel 9.95 and volt gauge is 12. For what ever reason the temp sender wire at the sensor test at 10v???
