1949 super A ignition problems

I wrongly posted this in another mans post. newbys, geesh. 49 super a has been converted to use a coil instead of magneto. Has run fine for over 20 years until last week. It lost power and finally had to have a pull before it would run. Checked spsark, very weak. New coil, no help. Cleaned points and gapped to .020 as per book with using coil instead of mag. Does not run. Tries to the point of blowing oil out the air breather. Not much to speak of just enough to let you know timing advanced too much. Not enough fire at plugs to run it. Any suggestions please?

new coil, new points, gapped correctly and no fire or weak fire. have you checked the condensor?

is this a 6v coil on a 6v machine with no resistors? if yes, have you tried jumpering straight from battery to coil primary in case ignition switch has bad contacts.

if this helps. check wireing and switch. if not, put test lamp inline with coil and roll her over.. lamp should blink if points are opening and closing correctly.

Just finished a similar nightmare today. It was
my brand new out of the box ballast resistor.Don"t
know if you have one or not

The weak spark... Is it weak at the coil or at the
plugs? Rotor, cap, or plug wire problem?

Can you elaborate on the blowing oil out the air
breather? That would have no connection to timing
being advanced. More along the lines of overfull of
oil, gas in the oil, compression blowby, blown head
gasket, melted piston... Have you checked the
compression?

(reply to post at 17:50:21 06/24/14) [/quoStill a 6 v coil, no ballast. Oil blowing out is nothing major, it's just a puff of oil mist that happens when it does hit. Spark is weak at the coil wire and plugs. Switch does work, push-pull type. Coil warms up pretty good when switch is on. That's when we get fire at the points. Spark at plugs is so weak I can't see it but others can. Going to have to go dealer way and find proper condensor. tractor Supply has generic off brands that I'm not comfortable with.

What do you mean converted to a coil from a magneto. You can have an externsl coil on a mag but its still a mag. Now you can remove the mag and install a dist. But if the mag is still there you still have a mag with an external coil. so what do you have.

Sorry I wasn't clear on that. The mag is still there, although it is inoperable. He broke the wire from the mag coil internally to the condersor. Using external 6v no ballast coil.

If you still have mag on it why not get new 6 volt coil, condenser, and points rotor and cap and use the mag?

If the impulses are good I would get new mag coil designed to fit that mag with cover. Fix the wire to condenser and put in a new condenser, rotor, points, cap, and new wire from coil cap to dis. cap. You should have good fire out of cap. Then check to see if you getting good spark at plugs( wirers could be bad) and you didn't say what kind of shape the plugs are.
