Today my son drove me to the eye surgeon, who has worked on both my daughter and wifes eyes,I am hard to impress, but he surely did. He answered all my questions, and told me about the scenario of cataract removal. Scheduled me for 2 different visits for surgery.

The left eye is the worst, it's like looking thru a chicken gizzard, the right eye is deteriorating quite rapidly. I can't wait to get them out of there. Because I'm diabetic, and because it's (cataracts) been on there for so long, it may take a little longer, but he is confidant it will work out great. All the office help are cheerful and pleasant, and it seems like more of the older folks are going to that eye clinic for help. You can remember I posted on here about this problem and got a lot of positive response from you folks who have had the procedure done. Thanks to you guys I'm going to do it,that way I can see to polish the 706 and check the oil.lol.Best regards,
LOU.
PS my son is still typing to my dictation.

I have had cataract surgery done in both of my eyes; no problems and can see much better.
Best wishes for a successful surgery.

I had diabetic cataracts on both eyes three years ago. I wore glasses or contacts since 5th grade. After surgery, 20-25 on left. On the right, 20-85 is the best they could do but it's way better than the 20-400 that it was. The worst part of the procedure is the adhesive on the mask they use, peels some skin.

huntingreen2day2,
Scaring me to death already. What are you trying to do talk me out of it.lol?. Gotta pay off the national debt somehow, I guess.Don't you really know the pharmaceutical companies are going broke.lol. I hope yours comes out great, it will be nice to see again. Thanks for your reply,
Regards,
LOU

I remember when my dad had one taken off. We were in the doctors office and the nurse said it is the left one to be taken off? My dad said "right". I immediately said "You say correct!" Dad then said, "yes correct". I can see how that might have ended up another way lol.

Mike,
I was told by the Surgeon that a I.V. is what he uses so I rest. Not out but for only a couple minutes so needle can be used underneath the eyeball, so there will be no discomfort . Will be awake so we can converse. He uses ultra sound to break up the cataract. wash out the eye, install lense. same procedure for the right eye one week later. Will have to use eye drops for 30 days.Lots for an old dog to learn new tricks. lol. regards LOU.

Ain't that the truth, it was unheard of 50 years ago, folks were relegated to coke bottle glasses, not any longer. Appreciate your reply,

Some old men get confused for word inflection, thats why I have my son go with me.He keeps me straight on the information from the DR's.I'm fortunate.

Hope it works out good for you Lou. My mom had hers done in the early 90's and went from not being able to drive to only needing glasses when she was driving.

Lou:

When I had mine done back in 2003, they did the Left eye first (20/400) and I had the anesthesia. Awake but no pain, but could feel the pressure of them working on my eye. When I had the Right eye done 6 months later, because I had nobody to drive me home after surgery, they couldn't give me any anesthesia & wanted to reschedule me. I told them to go ahead without the anesthesia (only the 2nd person to do that in their facility). The most difficult part was holding perfectly still, even when some of the pressures of them working on my eye got kind of intense, but even then there was no real pain. Kind of amazed even them, that I was able to go through the surgery without ANY anesthesia.

Lou, I"ve been reading your posts for a few years now. I wish you the absolute best with your eye surgerys. Some of your posts remind me of myself...both in what you do and your attitude regarding some things. I guess us old men just have to say it the way it is!
My main point in responding to you is to tell you I thought your reply to the man contemplating suicide yesterday was absolutely wonderful. It showed insight and compassion. I applaud you for your words of encouragement and reality towards this man. Sometimes it is enlightening to read what "an old fart with a heart" has to say.
All the best Lou.

(quoted from post at 03:24:28 06/24/14) Having mine done July 1st and 15th. Picked up eye drops today my part after insurance was $ 260.00. I bout $hit.

Wife just had Lasik surgery, her drops were only $45 but I had the same reaction. Seems high for two tiny bottles of drops.

Dr. Walt,
I asked about the anesthesia, the Dr said he could do it without but the injection to deaden the eye is a little intense, and as long as my Son is there to drive me back, I will go with it. After over 25 yrs of poking myself with needles (insulin) I do get tired of needles, but will go ahead anyway, tired of toughing it out with pain. Had a piece of steel removed from my eye a few years ago without deadener, the Dr wanted to use it but I am allergic to that type of deadener,so had to get it out without the drops. The assistant just about passed out, sort of changed his mind on practicing.lol. Thanks for the reply,

randallinMo,
Thank you for the kind words and wishes on my operation. I think getting older you can see what that young fellow was contemplating was a mistake from the years of experience one has gained. I wish him all the best and hope for a rest from his troubles and for him to see the mistake is one you can't change. Reading your post to me, I realize you know me better than most, and we must be alike more than most. I feel that if I can help I will, but pushed into a corner or called names I will become the bearer of bad news. I don't like to, I would rather be nice and help people, but will if pushed that way.
Thank you again, and I sure hope that young man got the help he needed,I think about him more often than not. Warmest regards,
LOU
