Hesston 1090 Need Pictures/Help

Hi all, I am trying to help my neighbor get his swather ready for the year, and basically, here is the problem...

At one point they decided that they HAD TO HAVE new guards, and basically they just stuck what they had on there!!! They are ALL different, some are singles, some are doubles. MOST say JD on them!!!

It is a Hesston 1090, 9ft Swather. I would like to know a part number for the guards, and would LOVE a picture of them so that I can match them up at the local Big R, IF they have them!

Also, I need to know what kind of teeth I should buy for them? They have one bolted sickle, and one riveted (spare), I couldn't see well enough in the barn, but it appeared that they were Top Side Serrated, or Not Serrated, a mix of both!

I know that teeth will depend on the guards, but I think that they should have top side's, also, what shape are they? 3?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am supposed to start cutting with it Friday, so they are really giving me a lot of time! Bryce

I use stub guards on mine and top serated sickles.
Seems to work the best in any hay, as long as you don't have many rocks in your hay field.

I just did this on my New Idea 290 9'cut. For just the guards, hold downs, and wear plates (the Hesston may not need wear plates) it was a little over $300 from Webb's sickle service. I bought some extra guards for both of our machines and some extra sections too, so all told I had just over $400 in my purchase.

He'll hook you up and make it right. Just Google it to find his website. He's a little higher than the local stores, but the quality of the parts is better too.

About 8 years ago we did everything on our 14' Hesston 1014+2 twin sickle machine when we bought it and it ran us about $600 back then, including new sickle bars.

How many is too many? Their soil is very rocky, and there are quite a lot of 1-3 inch big rocks on the ground, with a few 3 + rocks. We pick up the bigger ones, and they have never had any problem with the smaller ones.. Besides, the swather should ride about 4 inch off the ground shouldn't it? Bryce

I had a couple of pre 1090 Hesstons and my recollection is that Hesston, NH, and IH uses teeth with the same spacing between rivets. John Deere has different spacing. Don't know about New Idea or Ghel.

I understand the concept now about over or under serrating, but back in the day I didn't pay attention to it. ARIC all the knives on my equipment were over serrated, or worn and resharpened enough so that there was no serrations. Guards on the Hesstons and NH I had were double guards and had no serrations.

Our Hesston 1014+2 and New Idea 290 both use #2 sections. The New Idea is getting switched over to bolts as I replace sections that are riveted. The Hesston came bolted.

Bryce, I run a 1091 and can take a picture for you tomorrow morning. I get mine from our local hesston parts carrier so don't have a parts number for Big R or TSC but I do think there is one at TSC or Big R that will work. It's 10 and I just got in the house though so it will wait till morning.

Bryce, if you have rocks like that you will be breaking a lot of sections if the header is too low. If you look under the header you will probably see "shoes" that it slides on. On many mowers these are adjustable so that you can set your ground clearance. you would have to look from the back to see the adjustment.

Ok, so why do you feel you need to spend several hundred dollars on guards for an old wore-out swather? Because they don't all match?

If they don't work that's one thing, but if you're just being OCD, save your money. Guards at TSC are $15-$16 each, and you're going to need a bunch of them even for a 9' machine.

Here's the picture I promised, though I don't think you need it now.

Nope, I sure do! THANKS!! I am going to print it out and take it to the Big R with me tomorrow morning. Thanks again, I really appreciate it! Bryce
