This old barn will be no more

Today will be the last time the sun will rise on this old barn. A hi-hoe will pull it down this morning. Unused for years, and leaning for decades . One of three barns on a three mile stretch of road near me, to come down this year. These folks sold the boards on the internet for$2,000.00 should help pay the cost of clean up. Bruce

Forgot pictures, Duh! So here they are. Bruce

With a roof that tight, that was an easy fix up job. My barn had holes in the roof, rotten beam, cracked beams, etc. I'm still working on it but put 3,000 bales of hay in it yearly. Around here, the wind lifts an edge metal panel and it doesn't take long before the whole corner rots out.

Thanks for the photos Bruce; The reality is that (around here anyway)there are many of these barns of the same generation, that is to say built within 25 yrs of each other and now their time has come. Todays farming practices to not lend themselves to these buildings being useful and once unused they go downhill fast. I sure hate to see them go as I spent my youth working in and around this type of building. Todays barns don't convey the same warmth and security as their predecessors do. Tough to say but the modern barns of today do eminate the "factory" feel.

Yes it's sad to say these old barns served their purpose and owners well thru the years. Families worked in these old barns unlike the new buildings of today on farms other than dairy farms. People always say that "Times Change" but not really it's the People that change.

sad when you think of the people who built it and the families who worked and made a living there. there are lots of barns in the same shape around my part of the world. you really have to be inventive to find a "need" to keep one, but a few owners will make the effort and investment to preserve and reuse those old barns. sometimes it takes a lot of love.

We had an old barn burned by a fire bug 40 years ago. We mourned the loss for a long time but the truth is he did us a favor. I don't know where the money would have come from to maintain it all these years.

They can be saved, mine was not in that bad of shape, foundation failing and a couple of bad post. I jacked it up and put new foundation under it and tore off lean-to and added new addition.
Probably like the tractor I am working on, spending more money than I should, but wanting to keep the old barn around for a while longer.

TJ, thanks for taking the time and your good money to save the barn. You did a very nice job. Thanks for posting the pictures for us to enjoy. I like old barns. In my case it was money well spent to reuse the material, even if it is smaller. We use it for storage and a small rustic apartment in the loft at our small farm. We love it out there with the small second story deck, fishing pond and pavilion....James

If the frame is solid not rotted then I would try and put in bracing to square it up then from there. We nada to save as many of the old barns as possible.

Sad day indeed! I never understood just why so many old barns were abandoned and neglected that way. Sure, they served a purpose and still could. Everyone needs storage and/or work space. I would love to have one to use for a shop and store vehicles in.

About 25 years ago my uncle converted his old barn to one just for cattle, with walkout doors etc. I wired it for him and he gave me his old Nuffield. Barn is still in good shape, 2 foundation walls held together with 5/8 cable

Good on you TJ! I have an old post and beam bank barn. pretty much every other year I have to replace a post or beam under it or install a cable and chain system to bring it back from leaning. Maybe 4/5 of a decade ago I put a new roof on it. I hope to keep it in good order until I am gone.
