Might need a tedder

I knew when I bought that Vicon discbine that the conditioning rolls were rough. I went out and tried to cut with it yesterday and it was spitting more and more pieces out as I went along. After about four rounds it's was so far gone that all it wanted to do was wrap. I ended up taking the rolls right out. It makes a heck of a nice trailing disc mower. The hay's heavy and down like I haven't seen in a long lot of years, but it seems to be shaving it right clean to the ground. Only trouble I can see right now is,the hay isn't even hitting the deflectors and it's laying about an eight and a half foot swath from a nine foot cut. Good for drying maybe, but probably not for raking. I'm going to cut a piece of steel and see if I can put a deflector right close to the far end disc to get at least a little bit of a gap between the swaths.
Oh well,it cuts to beat the band and I don't have much in to it.

As many auctions as you go to, maybe you can find
another one for parts and get a decent set of rolls?
I'm sure you've already thought of that, but my two cents. LOL

Ya,I'll have to keep my eyes open. We'll see how it goes for a while with this thing the way it is. As ripe as the hay's getting,if we ever get any drying weather at all it just might work as is.

Ya,and all "tractors" used to be Hart Parrs. Terms become generic after a while. I used a small "d" so I skirted copyright laws.

Hay tedders work fine for most crops. Some, like haygrazer, have to be conditioned to dry out properly. Somebody familar with alfalfa can comment on whether or not it needs conditioning, I've never dealt with it.

Those Vicons with the 3 blade cutter heads cut real well. I have had a couple of them.

There are companies out there that recover the rolls. I was thinking its around $2k to do. Not cheap, but if you know the cutterbar is good you still have an operating machine for cheap. There is an amish shop around me that makes metal conditioning rolls. How about taking all the rubber off and welding steel onto the rolls to make your own steel conditioning rolls.

Ya,I think we've already lost one cutting on the tail end. I think it was July 10th when I finally got done licking my wounds and finished up last year. I'll be darned lucky to be done by then this year.
