OT: Strange animal noise

Wife and I were in the doorway of the shop yesterday evening enjoying the cool air after a very hot day. Was just after sundown. Just outside the back door, we heard a loud raspy noise that sounded like a half scream, half growl about every 30 seconds. Got the dog and one cat to the house and wife grabbed my pistol and brought to me. It was in deep under growth in the edge of the trees about 30 feet behind the shop. Moved back and forth about 15 minutes and could never get a look at it but could see brush moving. Told my wife to stay close to her sewing room door in case it came in the shop.
Finally shot one round into the ground and did not hear it anymore. Can a fox make that kind of noise? I know what a bobcat sounds like and this was not it.
Think I will keep the shotgun close and pistol in my pocket for a while.

A fox can sound like a woman screaming for help.

Can really make your skin crawl - even when you know exactly what it is.

Scream was a poor choice of word to describe this. It was a much deeper sound. Wish I could find the right words to describe it. It was very loud. I could have heard it a hundred yards away.

You know,we had the same thing happen a couple of years ago. Sounded like it was in the garden right out behind the shop. Never did figure out what it was.

After pulling up fox sounds on you tube, I have decided it it was the alarm call of a fox. The fact that it was so close and stayed so long kinda bothers me. My animals are nnalert for rabies, but my wife and I and the grandkids are not. I worry about the grandkids out playing in the yard when they are here. We had to dispose of a pup and a cat a couple of years ago when they were attacked by a skunk that tested positive for rabies.
Thanks for your replies.

I can believe it! Theres a couple of reports over KEHs way, and one or two on file at the police station here in the county. These are from the 70s though, and one of them even owned up to the fact hed been drinking. My brother swears up and down theres one in the woods behind his house over in Enoree, even has pics of tracks in the snow last year. I have to admit, they look like a big foot print! If I remember right, there was a report on the news a couple of years ago about in in Pickens county, maybe, dont remember now.

We have a couple fox close to the yard this year due to alot of water in the area, we think maybe last years den is flooded out and they found a new hole close by.... any friends that happen to be here and hear it have a hard time believing its a fox because it does almost sound human, kind of hard to explain tho... rrayk, rrayk, rrayk... generally means these's pup in the den and the adults are trying to lure possible predators in a differant direction.

I work evenings and get home about 2:30am so just about every night they're barkin at me when I get out of the truck, which then gets the dogs excited and they go tearing after it... often followed by the wife waking up and more rrayk rrayk rrayk... lolol

I believe it would be a fox. I have had them do that to me in daylight. Kinda creepy, I hear that noise and locate it. Fox standing on her hind legs looking over the grass at me calling like that. A couple days later I surprised her a couple hundred feet away. She had a den an 3 kits. I think the noise was a warning to the little ones.

I forgot you were out that way too! Heard tales over the years of several areas off of 56 all the way from Sparkle City to Greenwood about Bigfoot being there. My brother lives a few miles from 56, but swears up and down there is one out near his house. And he dont drink.

Don't know about Dark Corner Moonshine, but Oconee is known as the Golden Corner and there is "still" a bit made in the mountains.

Last summer I was walking in my woods which is on the opposite side of my small creek from my pasture which is very steep uphill in this area. The wooded area is a little flatter. Anyway, I had a little stick in my hand as I walked along, when suddenly I heard the most awful snarling and growling. It scared me and I quickly found a much bigger stick; I yelled but it still kept on growling and snarling like it was killing something. I figured it was not afraid of me at all so I hurried out into the open on the hillside of my pasture. I kept looking for movement, but never saw anything, so I went back home. The next day I went back with my.22 rifle but could not find any evidence of a struggle anywhere nearby. I still wonder what it was, anyone have an idea? I do not mean to break your thread but maybe add to it. Thanks, Mark

It can only be one thing.... I agree... It has to be a Squatch.
They are mating this time of year....
