BIG RUH

Got home from work last night about 10:30 PM, as I got out of the car I saw a mountain lion standing about 20 feet from the garage. I closed the door very quickly. Thankful for garage door opener. Scared the crap out of me. Never had one that close before.

we have many of them here one always has to take a good look around in the evening, night, and daybreak there around, the big question is not how many you see, but how many are watching you!
nothing like panning your flashlite and seeing critter eyes at night, but when you see eyes about 6 inches apart well i didnt need to go out as bad as i thought i did

Some years ago, there was a "discussion" about whether mountain lions had come back in California.

Discussion ended when some folks took a pic of their kids in a park. When they had the pic developed, there was a mountain lion in the brush not 10 ft from where the kids were standing.

Hope you aren't in Nebraska, and if you are, I really hope you are in Omaha, right next to Ernie's house!!

I know what you mean! Several years back I was driving home about 2 in the morning when out of the corner of my eye I saw something moving fast. I hit the brakes to see a big buck jumping the fence hitting the center of the road and in one bound clearing the other fence. This was bad enough but what came next shock me to the bone! As the buck cleared the second fence a big lion ( I mean BIG!) came across the first fence looking right at me and just like the deer he cleared the second fence in one bound! I sat there for a moment thinking did I just see what I think I saw? As I sat there I saw a sheriffs car coming at me and he stopped got out and asked if I had see a lion? I just pointed towards the field as the lion roared over his fresh kill, He dove back in his car! Within 5 min there were a 12 police cars there trying to find the lion with there spot lights and they did. The next morning it was all over the news hear in SW Ohio. I will never forget this as long as I live, Oh they never got the lion as it got away. Bandit

Hey Bandit,

I remember an incident that occured in Ohio quite a few years ago. Do you remember the guy who had a bunch of exotic animals on his place? The DNR was going to take them all away from him, so he just opened the gates and let them all escape. He then committed suicide.

I think that they were able to round up most of the animals and they killed a few of them rather than capture them.

Do you suppose that lion that you saw had anything to do with the guy's wildlife preserve?

Hahahahahahaha! I always wondered why people had the opinion of him that they did. Then one day on public TV they were showing the house in session and I got to find out why!

I live in Illinois, St. Louis area. It been known for quite a few years that there's atleast one in the area, but it's rarely seen, most of the time all you see is it's tracks. Guess I'll have start using my hand held night vision a little more.

Tom, the story got quite twisted, the DNR was not going to take them away, the guy was supposedly depressed about a divorce and something about his ex possibly taking them away. There is some that still question the whole thing, anyone raising those kind of animals would know exactly what would happen to the animals, like the cops shooting them dead, and anyone raising them would never put their animals in a situation like that, animal activists in the area had been protesting the farm, some think they released the animals, the owner then overwhelmed when he realized what they did shot himself.

Big news in the top of the state is a bear wandering around. I live west of Rockford and the bear was seen west of me, then north of Rockford a couple days, then headed east on I90, then south to Genoa and Sycamore, west to tear up some bee hives at Chana. This morning he was on the news in Polo in frt of a garage. This started about 10 days ago, lot of pictures and it's an improvement on the normal Rockford TV news.

Some years ago there was a similar "discussion" about a big cat in Southwest Michigan, if you mentioned it or reported it the DNR got kind of testy about it. They denied it existed and would turn six kinds of heck loose on you if you pushed the issue or reported it. Then one day someone hit it with a car and killed it, DNR had a hissy fit about that because they could no longer deny it existed, they changed their mantra to something like "There isn't a native breeding population...."

I don't think so, The cops and game warden said that they had checked all the counties around for people who had animals like that and found they were all accounted for. This one was wild for sure and it was never found. A friend of mine his farm house was less than 400 yards from ware I spotted it and killed and ate that buck on his farm. My uncle lived 1/2 mile east of the site and lost a calf the next night, Insurance paid for the calf because of the game wardens report. It was very unnerving to say the least for some time after that happened. That is something you see in the zoo, NOT jumping the road in front of you! I know it sure scared the crap out of me seeing it in real life not 20 feet away with nothing but a windshield betweens us. That is something you never expect to see in farm country in SW Ohio in your lifetime. Bandit

Those animals were all captured or killed. They were true exotic, I don't believe he had any mountain lions there. I could be wrong but I think they were mostly african cats and the like.

They used to call us crazy when we told the DEC we saw a Moose in NY. Now the DEC has news releases about the Moose that have been here for 30-40 years. The DEC still says there are no Mountain Lion, even though myself and a lot of other people have seen them. They also told us for years there were no bear around here, that they were all down in the mountains. They just opened bear season in my area!

Back when I lived in the Central Adirondacks I had a group of people stop their van in the road in front of my house and get out. I wandered over and found out they were all college kids and their Professor out doing some Ruffed Grouse study. I mentioned I'd heard a lot of drumming (Grouse drum their wings against their chest to attract she birds) lately. The Professor told me that was impossible, that Grouse didn't drum that time of year. I was about to say something, probably something crude and uncalled for, when a Grouse started drumming just up the hill. Professor Knowitall got red in the face and hustled his class back into the van......

Ernie Chambers. I couldn't believe he got elected in Nebraska when I moved out here. But then again I guess that nutjob that was running for senate in NY was the governor here, too.

They finally admitted that there's more than "a few rogue traveling males" here a few years ago and opened a season (that Ernie wants to close). The line seemed to be "there's breeding populations in every state around us but we don't have any mountain lions here".
