WOW,,,,,, What a MESS !!! Small town about five hrs away from me (East of Norfolk,NE) Pilger,NE got hammered by TWO TWIN tornadoes on Monday 6-16-14 the big twister went right down the middle of town. You tube has a lot of nasty videos of it. Two confirmed dead hopefully that's all !!!! Everybody stay stay and have a good or atleast a better week then these folks had !!!

I have never physically seen a tornado; just what they leave behind, & I don't know what I would do going through what they are! Closest I came was when I was a kid, I walked out the back door of the house, & looked almost straight up. The clouds were swirling in a rotation that was spinning about 45 - 60 rpm. I watched it pass straight over my head. It never touched down that I know of; but others did that day!

Had one come just a couple hundred feet from hitting straight on. Took 3 garages, machine shed, hog house, Lifted the house off the foundation. Ended up insurance totaled the house.
That was tornado Tuesday in south Dakota on June 24th. 2003. 67 documented tornadoes in a 12 hour period.

I did an insurance inspection on an office building in downtown Hastings after lunch yesterday and finished about 2:30. The building owner and I chit-chatted in front of the building for a few minutes and agreed you could feel it in the air that "something" was going to happen before the day was over.

That was just about the time the tornados started up by Norfolk, roughly a hundred miles north.

I wonder how many of the residences in tornado alley actually have a good tornado shelter?

I wouldn't even consider living in that area without a tornado shelter. I have brother living in Omaha and I know that he doesn't have a tornado shelter.

Older homes, built in 40s-50s in our area all had storm shelters, but not anymore.

Luckily, DFW area rarely gets tornadoes.

Went through one when I was 5. Don't remember much but my older cousin came and got me and an older lady that was baby sitting me. He had on a Clint Eastwood trench coat, took me under one arm, the lady under the other and we ran through the hail to my uncles storm shelter across the street.

Neither house was blown away, but many were. Soft ball size hail did the worst damage.

Wife was around 5 when something like that went through her town. Her dad was with the police reserve/ ambulance etc crew, they didn't see him for 3 days. Cut through town, a roof from a house landed in their yard. My wife still is very serious about any storm warning, that left a deep impression on her. Understandably.

In the 90s one of those just like that cut a swath 40-60 miles long, took out a small town here, passed just 6 miles south of my farm, then wiped out half of my county seat.

It was so odd in the sky that day, humidity was off the scale, sky was greenish, perfectly still air. You just knew something was going on somewhere.

Those towns are still recovering from all that. You can see the groves ripped up through the farm ground, and the path of new or abandoned buildings.

Friend of mine was driving on the highway, said he saw a twister on the ground, pulled over, saw a second one to the side then, looked around and saw a third one come down, and decided might as well keep driving, there was no place to hide.... It was one tornado cell, but it had many vortices go up and down as it traveled. At times they would join up and close to a mile wide.

Prayers for those folks, and the flooding and damage throughout SD, Iowa, MN.

I complain about too much water, or cutting up the trees that have fallen here the past 3 weeks, but I got it good....

Paul

That one in SD started 3 miles west of my place I called 911 to tell them there was atornado on the ground about mile 399. Operator said they already had the call and it was at mile 403. I said impossible, then ran around the east side of the house and there was the one at 403.I live on 401 Ave.

We have a crawl space under our house with an entrance from the garage that would make a good shelter, but my wife keeps stacking so much stuff on the door that it would take ten minutes to get into it.

There was another tornado just west of Stanton which is 9 miles west of Pilger. This one leveled one house that my 7 year old son was going to daycare last week and wanted to go to his old one instead this week. The couple protected themselves, their son and 4 other daycare kids in what was left of their basement, father received a slight concusion and the wife had the furnace land on her leg, kids were under them and okay. I hug my son a few times a day, but he got a long one tonight once we seen his old daycare residence. chris

The first fatality was a 5 yr old girl, the second was in a wreck during the storm, name withheld, according to KRVN. The mother of the girl is in an induced coma and the older brother is taking care of the second girl, who was unhurt.

We had rolling churning storm cells pass over us yesterday with hail, green clouds and wind gusts in every direction. It touched down around Walkerton and Angus Ontario.
There is a picture floating around with a direct lightening strike hitting the Bruce B nuclear plant. Didn"t even trip any of the units off line
