One of those split second decisions

I went to home depot on my way to work this AM.
It's in a strip mall along with a super market.
You pass by one to get to the other.
Big sign says Stop for pedestrians in crosswalk.
A lady is coming out with a full cart of groceries.
I slow. She stops abruptly and gives me a nod to go ahead.
I keep rolling.
So does her watermelon which is perched on top of all her groceries.
It hits the pavement and Splat.
I kept rolling.
Felt bad for her but she did give me the nod.
She looked pretty disgusted as I drove by.

Sounds like an interesting way to spend the day....Hanging out in front of the grocery store waiting for women to let their melons fall out....

Real simple; park and go into the store and get a replacement watermelon for her. Here in Iowa, it would be 'no problem'. I'd sure hate to live where assholes run the commissary.

If the sign said "Stop For Pedestrians In Crosswalk", that's what it meant. I'd have stopped and waved her across anyway.

I think you owed her a watermelon.

If the sign says stop, then STOP. What if there had been another shopper on the other side of the woman who had then walked out because he/she knew you had a stop sign?

I see people at the Lawrenceburg, IN Kroger who think that letting up on the gas for a stop sign is enough. They are going to kill somebody eventually.

Yeahbut she would have had to stop anyhow when she got to her car. Sounds like she had an insecure load. It would have been different if he'd bumped into her cart.

It's interesting how people will read things into what you write.
Nowhere did I say there was a stop sign or that I ran a stop sign.
I said [i:654c4848f0] "Big sign says Stop for pedestrians in crosswalk."[/i:654c4848f0]
I would have stopped for her if she had been in the crosswalk or had proceeded into the cross walk.
She was approaching the crosswalk so I slowed to a crawl to see what she would do.
Some people don't want to feel hurried or that they're holding you up to cross.
I do it too - motion someone to proceed even though technically I have the right of way.
She stopped and nodded for me to proceed.
That's when her melon fell out.
If I had stopped in spite of her nod it wouldn't have made any difference.
Her decision to stop caused the melon to fall.
I don't owe her anything except a maybe bit of sympathy.

The operative word here is "IN".
Unless the pedestrian is IN the crosswalk, he/she does NOT have the right of way to enter the crosswalk until traffic is clear. That is simply common sense. IN the crosswalk means IN the crosswalk - not "approaching" or "ready to enter" or anything else.

Stopping for said pedestrian to ENTER the crosswalk is a matter of personal COURTESY. I would offer the same courtesy to a pedestrian, BUT he does NOT owe the lady a watermelon.

said stop IF IN crosswalk she was not in crosswalk. In montana my friend was sheriff for years. He would give tickets for folks crossing in middle of street, thus stopping traffic . He said go to end of street and use croswalk where traffic was lawfully required to stop. His thinking was traffic having to stop in middle of block was a hazard and caused accidents.
