O.T. F150 rear end leak 2006

I have a small leak by the rear end on F150..It is leaking by the threads and nut that holds the pinion in.. dry everywhere else?..thanks in advance..

Oil is leaking past the splines inside the yoke.

Typically, the factory puts some king of goo in there to prevent this.

If you are comfortable taking the yoke off, clean it inside and the pinion splines, then wipe a ring of silicone sealant inside the opening in the yoke and put it back on.

Use a little Loctite on the pinion threads and tighten up the yoke appropriately so it"s TIGHT, but not tight enough to further squash the crush sleeve that sets pinion bearing pre-load.

I"m not sure what torque value a service manual would give for that application.

Bob,

I mark the pinion nut-to-pinion with a black marker and carefully unthread it.

When I re-assemble that nut, I can get it really close to original.

Dennis.

I would highly suggest checking w/a manual. I was working on a "66 Mustang and its manual gives torque values for a new assembly and values for a used assembly. Marking threads/counting threads will get you in the neighborhood but you might be standing on the street of failure without knowing exact values.
