Skunk in Hay Barn

My hay barn is one storey. I put down a layer of 6 mil plastic on the floor, then floored it with pallets. I put 7/16" OSB on top of the pallets. The barn is now full of spring cutting hay.

Unfortunately a skunk has taken residence under the hay in the space between the top and bottom board of the pallets. Due to the proximity to the colt barn, shooting him/her is not an option.

Should I put mothballs out at the skunk's entry point(s) during the night when he/she is out or should I put a flexible metal exhaust line to my TO-35 gas and put the other end between the pallets during the day...I don't want to burn the barn down, ruin the hay or have to cope with the odor of decomposition if I can't retrieve the carcas.

Or, do you guys have any other/better suggestions?

Thanks

Not sure why you cannot shoot the thing when it comes out in the evening...you a bad shot?

Either way, set a live trap with some enticing meat bait about 10 feet outside the hole. Make sure your buildings are closed as it will taint the hay if it sprays. You will catch it eventually and can drag a tarp over the top and then remove it.

Option 2 is to live with it and remove it when the hay is fed out.

Option 3 is block all but one opening, wait for him to head out in the evening and then block the rest.

If you run that exhaust under your hay you will probably be a good candidate for a Darwin award.

Where I work we get Skunks all the time. I work for a school district here in So. Ca. WE have found out the best way to get them out and leave is to use some of that good stuff. (that ladies like) I hope you know what I mean that prefume it works just get a box of cloth get it wet and put in the spots under the building. It works for us for some strange reason they leave ( they just can not take that good smeeling stuff). Try it.

If you know where it is going in and out, just pour a can of lewis lye in that spot. When they get it on their feet, they start licking and head for water. They won't come back to that hole.

I have live trapped a few and shot a few. Up until now the cover over the trap while moving has worked. I have good luck shooting in the head with a full choke 20ga. I believe the signal to spray comes from his brain,no brain,no signal,no spray. Just make certain all the dogs are penned up before trapping or shooting.

Any prefume will work it dose not have to be the good expensive stuff. JUst make it the cheap brands or the stuff that you do not like.
