Birds In The Barn

What works when it comes to keeping these Sparrows out of the pole barn? They have nests all over, and make a mess on the floor and equipment.

String a batch of monfiliament fishing line through the rafters and trusses at all kinds of angles, as much as you can. Keep it up out of your way, but especially near doors and places they can fly in and out. It doesn't take too many collisions with it and they move on quickly. They can't see it when they're flying....

Ultradog, that's the only thing that does work ! My cats don't seem to bother them at all. plastic owls don't help. Plastic snakes don't help. I spent hours putting up fish line - didn't work, hung CD's from fish line too - don't bother them a bit. My only problem is - I'm out of 22 bird shot !! Stores around me haven't had any for the past two years ! May have to pay a hoarder's price to get some more !!

I bought a squawk box at a flee marker that puts out a loud noise of a predator. That seems to work. If nothing else I will give the birds insomnia and they will leave.

We use a kite that looks like a Hawk. Swings around and keeps them out. Have it hanging just as they come in the door. They make a fast 180. But they do have other places to build, because they keep the fly's under control.

Keeping any doors that will close shut when possible. I put up a ladder so the cats could get up and walk the bracing between trusses and rob any nests. seems like the barn swallows are always looking for an open door also. gobble

Hang some old CDs or DVDs on fishing wire. Preferably where they will catch the light and any wind.
Birds can't handle the light flickering as the CDs swing around and catch the light, and they stay away.
May sound odd, but works ok.

Other than a pellet gun the only even moderately effective item I've seen are those bird strips with the nails sticking up out of them. But you have to cover every surface with them.

Cats don't do anything for our bird issues, they just produce more crap and pee on everything. I prefer the birds. At least I can shoot them without SWMBO having a fit.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Covering the bottom of the trusses with metal would work, but is an expensive alternative.

Before I cut back on hay ground I supplied a stable owned by some very well heeled people. They installed moveable screens in the doors early on, then they hung the owls, then they installed electronic noisemakers. Finally they installed chicken wire on the undersides of the trusses. That seemed to work. At our church the crows were tearing up screens and I had red about fishing line along the building a little out from the screens. I installed fishing line and it appears to have worked well.

close em in, in the evening.
close all doors and windows,
let a few tractors run in there for awhile......
Don't gas yourself :D
