Putting a water pump on a 466 in the field, 23 miles out in the country. Should have easily been done at 10 am this morning.

I'll say it again: Anyone who uses gasket sealer Hasn't got sense enough to own a set of tools!! I've been 'scraping gasket' all silly day long.

I was taught to put a small dab of gun grease on your finger tip and rub it thinly on the paper-like gasket before mounting the water pump to get a good seal. And it comes off nicely later, too.

Always loved working on those . The owners usually put enough goo on to seal 5 complete tractors . I have seen the stuff make its way the rad and plug it.

This works pretty good to.

Allan , I changed one on a 1030 case out in the field many yrs. ago . Lost a bolt , looked everywhere , could not find it . Got a new bolt and got it all put together , started it up and that lost bolt went straight through the radiator !! Kinda funny now but it sure wernt at the time !!

Sometimes old original gaskets age to the part sealer are not...
I glue the gasket to the pump with 3M 8001 contact adhesive (because I can remove the gasket to the pump on the table) and apply a very thin coat of RTV to the gasket to block side (every one knows you can scrap off RTV with a razor blade)... I am sure someone will come along and had rather chisel off a gasket that has bonded to the block....

that's why i get paranoid when i loose a nut or bolt.

There are these little round Scotch-Brite pads that fit a die grinder. Works really well to remove gasket material and RTV. Need air or electricity for the tool, so it might have not helped on this one. Doesn"t seem to gouge into aluminum either.

I usually use contact cement on the part side and a little grease or the like on the block side. I would rather be cleaning up a part on the bench or tailgate than cleaning up a block. I have had to get back in to adjust valves or such and the old gasket was reusable since it didn"t rip or stick.

"Ya ever work on a Cummins from some years ago that has the OEM aweful-gunk-lined-with-asbestos gaskets?

Even when installed WITHOUT and added sealer they become part of the casting they are squashed against.

Before I learned better,I did work for apartments from time to time. They install window glass, door latches, mail boxes, plumbing fixtures, appliance knobs, cabinet hardware, light fixtures, switch plates and,,,,,anything else they touch with Dap Tub And Tile Caulk.

Yep just did one on a 414 yesterday out in fresh plowed ground , no air no electric all done by hand and it took one hour and fifteen min. from the time i opened the tool box till i closed the tool box . Now had i had air i would have been in and out in about 45 min. What ya need in your tool box is a set of CARBIDE scrappers , ya don"t PUSH them ya PULL them and even them old gskt."s on a Come A Part come wright off or the gskt."s between the speed transmission and the range transmission on a binder . The Farmer was in total shock at how fast i got him back up and going .

Just goober a bunch of silicone over everything and slap it back together. I mean use a whole tube.

At least that seems like whoever worked on my stuff previously did. BW
