I just finished clearing out the mulberry trees growing in the fence around a rental property we recently picked up. The stumps are still there, some of them embedded in the fence. Is there any way to kill the stumps to stop the return of this Arboreal Menace?

The property is inside the city limits with neighbors all around, so fire is not an option.

For trees that are notorious for sprouting from the roots, we use a cordless drill with a large drill bit.

Drill several holes in the stump and pour undiluted Round up or even better, undiluted Remedy, in the holes. It will be absorbed by the roots. Dead issue.

I have used roundup that comes with the purple cap and mixed it with diesel fuel 50 50 and brushed it on a freshly cut stump with 100% success. There is a cheaper method, might be the tordon mentioned below.

Straight, Roundup, on the stump, will work. Get a little in a cup, use a paint brush to Paint, the top of the stump, with a heavy coat.

Tordon will work but you must apply it on a freshly cut stump for it to be effective. You need only apply it to the perimeter circle of the stump.

We use Gordon's Stump Killer. Comes in a quart bottle,in consistency of molasses. Pour some on the stump within an hour of cutting the stump. We also make a girdle cut maybe waist high all around the stump about an inch deep thru the bark if a large tree or a high stump cut. Put the product in the girdle cut. This product is 32% glyphosphate with sticking agent thrown in for good measure. It works every time. Watch for weather reports ahead of this. The product does not need to be mixed with anything.

Can't understand why anyone would get rid of mulberry trees we had one in our checken pen and spent hours eating them. Yum, Yum.

I happen to make a living killing invasive / exotic weeds and trees. I can"t speak for Tordon (not legal in FL due to groundwater). But we regularly use a 80% crop oil 20% tryclopyr (remedy, Garlon 4 ). This can be applied cut stump or frill and girdle (cut the bark back with a machete or hatchet 1 or 2" all the way around and paint the cut. ) this mix can also be applied to the bark, no cutting, from the root coller up the trunk,18", all,the way around. Round-up straight works well too, but must be applied to a cut stump immediately. This is not so critical with the tryclopyr /oil mix. Hope this helps.

Walt, I grew up eating mulberries, too. But they are a huge nuisance when they get established in fences or hedges. You can never rely on tenants to keep stuff under control, so they have to go!

Doesn't Tordon have to be applied right after cutting? I would read the label. I cut some trees and was gonna go back a few weeks later with Tordon. Someone told me I had waited too long.

Now I can't swear that this is right, so check me out.
