Squeaking belt

The serpentine belt on my Ford 8240 squeaks loudly. It goes away temporarily when I spray water on it so I know that it is not one of the pulleys. I have spent a lot of time getting it perfectly aligned but it still squeaks badly except when I throttle down after working for awhile. Could it be the belt itself?

I've never had a serpentine belt squeal but I've had regular fan belts squeal so bad they'd send chills up my X wifes spine & then I had troubles . My Dad always used a large bar of moistened Ivory soap on them . A dry bar wouldn't let the soap stick so it had to be moistened before applying it . I found a spray belt lubricant at an auto parts store once wnich didn't seem to work as well as the Ivory soap did . HTH ! God bless, Ken

It most likely is the belt. That would be the
easiest and cheapest first try.

Sounds like you've already checked the obvious,
alignment and tension. But take a look at the
pulleys, especially the crank pulley and the
alternator. Be sure they aren't worn. It takes a
careful inspection, the ribs of the new belt should
not bottom out between the ribs of the pulley.

I had one on my '91 Ford Ranger that squeaked till it almost drove me nuts. Replaced the belt with a new "Gates" brand and haven't had a squeak since.

I heard a belt noise one time that I thought was the power steering pump:it was a neighbor's car and I told him to change the pump. He did and still had the noise, so he changed it again. Turned out to be the belt! Moral:change belt first. Mark

The belt on the bale loader did that. We always used the bar of
soap trick. We didn't use ivory - we used the free ones from a
hotel.

Bees Wax is a belt's best friend..

Will help them last a longer time and seems to eliminate squeal..water-proof, too..

Ron.

Your belt is glazed or tenioner spring is soft or stuck. Also make sure you have right length belt.

friend had a chev.van that had a squeek. dealer changed the belt five times. i happened to be looking at the motor and sotted a dent in the tenioner wheel. replaced, cuured. worth looking at. wally

My 93 ford pu has done that a lot. The only thing that will fix it is a new belt. I put 3 of them on so far. It is worse in damp weather also.
