ram 3500 shifting problems

i have a 1999 ram 3500 with the cummins diesel in it it started grinding gears when trying to shift into gear especially reverse and some gears wouldnt go in at all without shifting the gearshift back and forth and when in gear and i held the clutch petal down for a while it would try to engage so i replaced clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder assembly as a unit like dodge recomends and still the same problem clutch is strong doesnt slip but im puzzled what could be wrong

Darvin,
How many miles and do you pull anything? Had to replaced my clutch at 90,000 miles and I did not have a ton of hours pulling either.

it has 311000 miles 10000 of which i put on it i pull a trailer once in a while it pulls good no slippage i just tried it again a few minutes ago

This is a typical failure mode for manual clutches, for Ford, Chevy and Dodge trucks. The clutch is not releasing when you depress the pedal. I cannot explain why it does this, but the fix is to repalce the disc and pressure plate. On my Chevies, I tried replacing the master cylinder, but it did not help.

Good Luck

As stated the Clutch need to be replaced.
Had the same problem with a Ford 550 at 80,000 miles.
You did Great getting 300,000+ out of yours.

on the 99 Dodge diesel we had, they used plastic rivets to hold part of the clutch together. After the 2nd 1 from Dodge we went to Certifed Powertrain and picked up their heavy duty pressure plate and disk. Had no problems after that and is was a lot less expensive than Dodge.

I fixed one a few weeks ago like yours,,, someone put the wrong fluid in the trans... The guy that did it knew it and bragged he was saving the owner money... That's a can of worms I will not open up I put what OEM calls for that's the best I can do the customer will just have to suck it up in this case anyways...

I was starting to have trouble getting my 02 Cummins into 1st and reverse was always hard. After 120,000 I replaced the trans oil with the correct stuff from Dodge and you cannot believe the difference it made. 1st slips right in now and reverse is better than it ever was.

A lot of times the input bearing or bushing in the flywheel will go bad and that will cause the problem your having because the input shaft still turns even with the clutch is disengaged.
