Kawaksaki engine issue

Last week I loaned my neighbor my ZTR since he had helped me do some concrete work the week before. When he checked the oil he said that he forgot to screw the dipstick back in and it blew almost a quart of oil our all over the engine, deck, back of the seat etc. He stopped the mower and called me over. The oil was still on the stick just a few millimeters below the low mark. I added some oil and attempted to start it. Now I have to leave the choke on for about three minutes while it warms up blowing grey smoke and when I shut it down it acts like it doesn't want to stop running, like you are slowly shutting the fuel supply down. I took it to dealer today and they said it would be 12 days before they could look at it. How bad do you think this is gonna be. Also, its only got 120 hours on it....

RN May be right on target. The fact that it tries top run after shutting it down might indicate a stopped up air filter or rather oil soaked. Also having to choke it and getting smoke on start up could also be results of oil soaked air filter. IF I were you I would make a quick drive by the dealership and look. Some new guy fresh tech may overhaul your engine before you know it and get a good bill.

I agree change the air filter. Could have been covered in oil when it blew out. If it cranks and runs. Most likely no damage done.Just a mess to clean up.

Another lesson learned the hard way in loaning anything out. What if it is a 1200 dollar blown engine? Is he going to pay? Don"t hold your breath. Tom

hat he says ^^

I'll third that. If there was oil close to the add line it didn't harm that engine. There's probably oil sucked into the intake.

Start cleaning good. Replace the air element. I'm impressed that the guy stopped right away.

My first thought is a clogged filter, but the adding choke does not support that. I would suspect an ignition problem and running on is usually idling to fast.

Did you get oil on the ignition system?

Just to link the oil fouled air filter to needing to run on choke: My Kawasaki (air cooled v-twin) has a vacuum powered fuel pump. I don't know exactly how the pump works but is does need a vacuum signal from some where. If the air filter is fouled it may interfere with the manifold vacuum (?) signal preventing the pump from operating at full capacity. If the engine is starved of fuel that could result in the run on at shut down as well.

Just throwing this out - maybe some one smarter than me knows how the pump works. Good Luck
