what is the trick to switching the pto from 1000 to 540? it wont go in all the way and i was told not to force it?

i presume you mean swapping the shaft one end for the other, not with the speed controller that was in the cab on some models, to get 540 rpms, put the 1000 end into the tractor and push against the spring, you may need to rotate the shaft a bit to get it to fully engage, then with pressure still on the shaft snap the retaining ring into place.

oj has it exactly right.
I cant remember off hand and Im not close to mine, but one way goes really easily and the other way you do need a little more push and twist action. Either 540 or 1000, you should be able to push it in by hand though. Just have a pliers and the snap ring within easy reach. BW
