Hey everyone,
Thanks for listening, I have a john deere 2640 1980, when you run the pto it some times slips out of gear, I just pull it back in gear most of the time or hold it for a while. Is this a major fix or some thing I can do my self to cure the problem.

Well there is a lever down by your left foot that puts the power take off in gear , then there is lever between the shifters that you pull up to turn on the pto, this is the lever that keeps dropping down and turning off the pto I don't have to use the clutch to turn it on or off.

Detent ball and spring are missing or broken.
I haven't figured out how to post screen shots but anyways.

The independent pto lever parts diagram has to be in there somewhere...........

Here's the balls & springs b&d referred to which I agree that is probably the problem.

2 ea R26552 Ball - BALL,STEEL ADD 1.36 USD 2.72 USD
2 ea R49547 Spring - SPRING ADD 2.58 USD 5.16 USD

Hey thank you for reply,
The reason I am asking, this tractor belongs to a neighbor and I borrow it once in a while. I thought if it was an easy fix I would fix it for him for the use of it. I have my tractor down for a water pump right now. Well he said he wants to sell it (9000.00) so I was thinking on buying it. I don't know much about the 2640 because there are not many around here.
