woodchuck removal

We live in neighborhood with close neighbors and have
woodchucks eating near the garden. Whats the best way to rid
of them other than the obvious cause we cant shoot them?

i use the bridger #220 body grip traps on woodchucks. just set the trap over the hole and stake it down real good. the coyotes may run off with the trap and chuck.
poke here

If in a neighborhood any body-hold trap will surely get you a neighbor"s cat, dog, small child (kidding) and depending where you live be a bigger pain. Bait a Have-a-heart trap and take him for a long ride (and don"t get caught doing that either "cause depending where you live, transporting a wild animal is a no-no too.)

When I can't shoot them, I use a gas bomb. I light it and throw it down the hole and them close the hole. You also need to locate the second hole and close it also. I get mine at the local Rural King store.

I use smoke bombs to locate all entrances for woodchuck holes, then fill all but one, and use the gas bomb. Works very well, as long as they are in the hole. I find the holes, mark them, fill them in in the evening, and gas them. If you try it during the day they are likely out eating and you will miss them...

Melon balls are a very good bait. If using a live trap, put several on the ground, and set trap over them. Critter will try to get through bottom of cage, and will surely trip the catch.

I'm over run with them, at the base of the hill I live on, the only effective way would be to use the smoke bomb, cover the exits etc. I've done it with a small quantity of gasoline when there was no time to deal with any of them, and the holes were dangerous. Trapping is fine, live or kill but it takes time.

I had some go into the havahart, some just outsmart it, they are not stupid, I like the species, and have released them in abandoned areas, shot some and when they really put the pressure on me, I resorted to the gasoline when they were at the brink of taking my gardens down, hot and dry conditions they have to eat too, and you will compete with them if you have a garden that is for sure so I soak a rag but good, stuff it in the den entrance as far as it will go, then cover the hole(s), if you walk where they feed early morning, noon time and or afternoon evening, likely they will retreat to the den, they don't range far from safety, then you can employ any of the means, trapping, fuming or smoking them suffocates them out. Shooting them is time consuming anyway, downright pain the butt to wait em out. I hate resorting to taking them out, but you let that population get out of hand, like it is here still, my neighbors are now shooting some every year, no doubt its best to get after them, you'll never rid a place of all of them if there is enough habitat.

As said cover the holes after putting in a couple of Gopher Gassers. Avail at most Lowes stores.

OK farm boys.....When we were kids we had hogs and hogs bring rats. The rats would make tunnels under the concrete. So we took a piece of 3/8 copper tubing on the end of a hose attached to the ammonia applicator tank. It worked real good. Turn the hose on and step back and wait for the choking little guys to come out. They were stumbling, not running so it was easy to step on them. It should work good for a chuck as well.

forgot to mention that there is no woodchuck holes-live next to a hardware/lumber store and are getting through the holes in the walls. what bait is good for a trap along with melon balls?

Bait a couple of live-catch traps with broccoli. We catch and relocate a dozen chucks a summer from our garden area. Can't really say if we catch a dozen "new" woodchucks or some are repeat offenders. I kind of like them but not their holes all over the place. I wouldn't kill any animal just because of a little inconvenience. I'm sure the woodchucks don't find me very handy to have around either.

One dug down right next to my pool. I put brand new lines in two years ago. Next garage sale with a Havahart trap and he is getting broccoli and a trip up to the Palisades. I hope he is not chewin' on new pool line down there. They are kinda annoying.
[ on a sidenote you can probably shoot them on the fourth of July or New Years Eve at midnight and nobody will call the cops]

What about a pellet gun, very quiet, I seen pellet guns go thru 1/4" plywood. That is for sure enough to kill a wood chuck.

I have a large Havahart trap and groundhogs/woodchucks living under several buildings and brush piles, also. I mostly catch raccoons in the trap but one night something got into the trap but clawed their way out the back side. I think it must have been a groundhog as it broke the wires apart. I shoot at them if I have my shotgun nearby.

If you live trap them, a 55 gallon drum full of water is extremely helpful to drown them, silent kill. Anyone who transports and releases them damned things should be drop kicked by the owner of the property they are infesting with them. There is no good that comes from these things undermining and making holes for other worthwhile animals to break their legs in.

Use an M-80 with a long fuse, Light it and push it down the hole with an old pool stick as far as you can. Concussive force will kill them. All so could try lighting a sulfer stick and put down the hole, Nothing likes sulfer. Bandit
