old generator to alternator

If I understand this correctly I can change my Minneapolis Moline R from the original 6 volt generator to a one wire Alternator. Since this tractor has a magnito there shouldnt be any problems, correct? I also am told to change it to a 12 volt, negative ground. If I go this way besides changeing the mounting bracket and pulley I should be ok. Any suggestions on what brand or auto store to purchase from? Thanks Larry

Larry,

My preference is a 10 SI Delco, plentiful , cheap, and available at most auto parts in a 1 wire configuration. One word tho, the low RPM engines as used by MM and Case sometimes do not have enough rpm to excite a one wire.

There is another regulatir for the 10SI called a D10AC which requires removal of the diode trio and wires to excite the regulator directly from the stator output. On this type if its turning its charging.

It is not hard to install but better if you have some previous alternator experience. A rebuilder would fix one up cheaply for you.

The other alternative is to simply use a adapter plug available at the parts store and a simple light bulb in series with the ignition switch to the coil + side and the other to the output terminal of the alternator.

Those are readily available at better auto supplies and online. Delco is the most popular brand. You'll probably get a better price online, can take your time and research what pulley you'll need to match the width of the ones on the tractor. Sometimes you can reuse the generator pulley.

There are several options, if you just want to get away from the generator and keep the 6v, that can be done. There are also alternators that look like generators for a more original look.
The advantage of keeping 6v is it's easier on the starter, and you keep the same battery, lamps, etc.

10SI Delco with proper installation and good wiring and connections is very dependable. I, myself prefer the 3 wire setup.

He has a magneto, so his on-off switch is a grounding kill switch so no switched 12 volts to excite the #1 pin on alternator.

Some options to excite the #1 pin would be a momentary push button to apply voltage, but would have to remember to press it each time you start the engine. Could also use an oil pressure activated switch, or a double pole-double throw toggle switch with one side activating the alternator in run position and other side to ground the mag in stop position. Caution on this is that switch could get bumped on with engine not running and damage the alternator.

The Brillman Company has a 1 wire, special for tractors, with a low cut in speed. Its $64.50, last one I bought it was free shipping.

Thanks for the help. The tractor was really a mess electricaly so changing things around is ok. I like the idea of the one wire alternator. My only issue is a mounting bracket and the pulley configuration. The original bracket is held on the tractor by two bolts and could fabricate something if I could see a picture or what someone else has done to make this work. The tractor won't have a lot of use, just something for my dad to drive around the farm. Thanks Larry

Larry I myself prefer the 3 wire. It's simple to set up and about bullet proof.

Just have to fab mounts most likely. Should be pretty simple and if it's above your skill level I'm sure you have a welder or mechanic in your area that can fab the mounts too.
