walking onions, Larry and Billyc

here is a few shots of my walking onions. A lady dug them up last year and gave them away. I brought home a basket full and replanted them in containers. I had them as a kid and we never bought them, always kept them on the south side of the house and they grew forever. They are great to have around.

Yep, that's what mine look like only I plant them in my garden and dig them up in late spring and replant in fall for winter onions. Still have plenty of the red bulblets if anyone wants them.

I don't remember seeing those offered around here, We used to have them at home in Illinois. I make do with a 18" dia. pot on the deck, full of Chives. It sure is nice, to be able to step out there with a pair of sissors, and clip off what you need, for scrambled eggs, or a salad, we also grow Basil, and some other herbs, that I don't know how to use, but swmbo does!

I would like to know also, what are walking onions? Do they grow a bulb like a slicing onion? How do you use them? I never heard of them until a couple of days ago here.

Walking onions are not slicers. They are a multiplying type, mainly used as green onions. They are called "walking onions" because they make small bulblets on a stalk that bends over and when the cluster of bulblets touch the ground they grow a new clump of onions. Those will grow and develop the bulblets and fall over starting another clump in a new place. Don't know how much ground much ground they will cover if left alone. I dig mine and start new crop in the fall. The bulbs formed underground can be peeled and eaten also. Sort of like a shallot.
