John Deere 50 wide front power steering problem

First, for all readers, if you made suggestions about this tractor not charging, thanks as it is now charging due to suggestions from this forum. However, doesn't do much good that it is charging as now we can't turn it! It has power steering and is wide front. Power steering pump was leaking bad so cleaned it and put gasket in it. Put all back together but steering catches, completely locks up. We have tried everything shown in I&T manual and cannot figure out problem. Thought was just in the adjustment but thinking maybe something internal that we are missing. Thanks in advance for help. Any suggestions are appreciated.

In addition to all the things that can go wrong in the upper steering worm and valve area, the vane motor can have a number of failures... on is for the two bolts that attach the moving vane setup to the vertical steering shaft to break, in which case thew steering will act just as you describe.

Have you had the pedestal apart down to the vane motor area and checked it out?

Im not sure dad had narrow front but theres a gear on top of the pedestal and it was flipped over the gears on one side was shot .its been a few years but i think that was done .i do remember a 4 row cultivator and no power steering !!

Thanks Bob, Yes, we have had apart to vane motor area. Unfortunately we have had the entire assembly apart several times. We did find a broken flow control spring and thought we had it with that but no such luck. We just got it back together again and now it is not locked tight to side as it had been doing. We can get it to move just still keeps catching. Not certain which two bolts you are referring to but we have found nothing like that broken. Will keep plugging along. We don't give up easy. Have been at this a week now but still not getting it figured out. Thanks again and keep suggestions coming if you have time. Jeff and Pati

It will be interesting to hear what you do to cure the problem. Pop had a JD 50 that had a catch in the streering from the day he bought it to the day he sold it. It would catch, you'd revevse the wheel a bit and then it would steer okay until the next time it decided to catch.

Interesting information. Thanks. We are starting to think we are not going to find it but we don't give up very easy but maybe it is just known to the tractor so thanks for info. If we ever do figure it out, will post what we find.
Thanks to all.

Problem partly to blame is the IT manual. They contain just enough info to get most people into trouble.1-800-522-7448 for a real JD manual.
The steering worm and pins are worn. They need to be replaced. Normal for high hour equipment.

We were thinking that but they don't look worn, not saying they are not but why would that make it "grab" like it does and catch?
Thanks! Also, we have another more in depth John Deere 50 manual but it doesn't cover the power steering. Went to John Deere and they were trying to figure it out for us using an I&T manual : )
Thanks!

Go to the John Deere Forum and look for Rich Duane. He specializes in 2-cyl. power steering.

If you jack up the front of the tractor so there is no weight on the front wheels, start the tractor and turn the steering wheel will it catch?

Going to try that now. Can you please let us know what that will tell us and/or what we should be looking for when we do this? Thanks again for everyones help. We have it now so it only does it occasionally, not stuck completely like it was. Thanks again.

It's interesting to me that you have a "50" with power steering. I thought the 50-60-70 series were built in '53 -'55 and power steering first started with the "20" series in 1956. I remember seeing my first 620 that had power steering and it was listed as a '56 model.

PS option was released in May of the 1954 production year of the Waterloo two cylinders.Starting at serial # 5020400 on the 50.
PS option $$$ wasn't all that popular with people who had lived through the depression 20-25 years prior. Some of those tight wads would have deleted the tractor seat if it had saved $50.
Last 50 was built on May 14th 1956.
