value of SMTA

With out pictures more info hard to say. But i'd start at scrap price. If its that bad you will have $1000's into it to get it running and $1000's more to make it a show queen. Tires alone will be a $1000, motor rebuild $500-$1000 minimum. I'd start at $400 and go from there.

About 6 years ago when I had a little play money and a lot of ambition I went to an auction to buy one of them fitting that description, pure junk. It sold for 3400 bucks, I was going to go 8 or 9oo and never even got my hand up, never seen anything like it.

That one sounds pretty far gone. SMTAs have value to collectors ($3000 to $5000?), but I doubt you could make any money fixing that one up. Sad to say it, but it's probably worth the most as a parts tractor. Take a good look for anything that can be salvaged off it and is only used on SMTAs, like the grill and sheet metal.

Is there really going to be much more work fixing a rough looking tractor, than an ugly running tractor?
In my opinion, not really. Getting an engine unstuck is not that difficult, if you like the mechanical side of the job. Tires are expensive.
Pay for it, what you think it is worth to you.
Don't let people talk you out of doing what you really would like to do.
After it is gone, it is to late to do it over.
