Well, I am looking at a new saw, a Husky 288! Little bit bigger than what I have now, and sounds like it is really nice shape.

It is a 288, with a 28 inch bar.
PLUS it is a "Pro Series" machine.

The guy wants $450 for it in fully working condidion, it is a good friend of mine, so I trust him to tell me the facts!

Are they good saws?
Is it worth it?

What do you guys think?? Bryce

288 is a hell of a saw. 87cc and 6hp not for the amateur. A little heavy at 16.7 lbs for the powerhead alone. $450 sounds like a decent price if it's in good shape.

My brother and I each have 372xp's and love them. My cousin has a pair of 395xp's, but they are heavy to tote around. They really cut wood though. That 288 should be in the middle of these two saws. With a sharp chain, you will really cut some serious wood.

A 288 is a pro series saw. It should handle a 28" bar in most wood pretty well as long as you keep it sharp. If you can't sharpen it then all bets are off. $450 is a fair to great price depending on condition.

I have two, need to get the fresh flywheel on the one I learned to cut wood with.
Pretty good saw besides the weight.
I was looking into selling them and getting a newer lighter saw, but everywhere I looked, was offered $200 for the one that runs with the low-use bar and a spare chain, $100 for the one that needs the flywheel installed and a recoil.
Evilpay prices are higher than what most are willing to pay for one. Sounds a little high for what I was finding price-wise, unless it's in perfect condition and the bar and chain are new. If it's sound mechanically, it might be worth it, especially if he's willing to help with any repairs and show you how to tune it properly.
Do yourself a favor and get a 20 inch bar and chain for it, save the 28 for the really big stuff.
