Last Bean Planting

My Brother and I have decided to hang up the farming. Grew up on a fair sized farm working for my Dad. Worked in the grain business and then farmed with my Bother later on when my Dad passed away. Between both of us working off the farm, and both having good jobs that require a lot of time, we decided that working long days (at times), there just is no time for enjoyment anymore. Thus, we have decided this is our last year.
I was planting beans in some of the wheat that we killed due to an extremely dry and harsh winter last night and got to thinking that I had better get a couple of pictures.
I sold the JD 1560 Drill to a fellow, just to make sure I didn't change my mind...lol! He wants it as soon as I am done.
Now the big question is whether to have a farm sale, or just sell the pieces off one by one. Probably just sell off one by one.
Hate to get out, but sure getting out after a few years of good crops and higher prices.
I am in Central KS. However, I still have relation farming, so I'm sure if I want to get dirty, there will be plenty of opportunities. Plus, I still have to put up hay for my 4 Giant Hayburners...LOL! Bob

I know you have done the best for you and your family - too bad it has come to giving up the farming. Love the horses and the White. Maybe give it a little more time and cut back on the effort, hope you have no regrets. HPH (Health, Peace & Happiness, Bob

I am convinced that a well advertised farm auction will bring you far more money than you could ever get selling piece by piece.

Keep a small loader tractor or buy one with your auction money. Lease the property and enjoy life.

You can always buy equipment in the future if you change your mind. I believe the worst thing you can do is just let the equipment sit and depreciate.

My thoughts,
Rick

Sorry to hear that Bob! Had a great time visiting when I picked up the 930 this spring. Wish you all the best! There is definitely a time to enjoy life, so have fun!!! Dan

Yes, they are Percherons. Two of them are half brothers, and the other two are half brothers, but the two pairs are not related to each other, if you can make any sense out of that. Bob

I have a nice JD 6140D loader tractor and the newly aquired White 2-80 that I will keep. Plus a very nice older 60JD that was my Grandads that I will keep. That and all my hay eqt. I bale large rounds as well as small squares, so that will keep the interest up. My Brother and I own 200 acres so I can always get back in. I am only 55 so still have a ways to go....hopefully.
One thing I might miss is that I always tried to have a plow day on some of our ground each year. Even though we no-til most of our ground, we still have large/heavy enough eqt to straighten the ground back up after a bunch of antiquer's plow for a day..LOL!

Thanks for the reply.

Dad kept his last two Percherons until 1956 and still used them on occasion. He loved those horses, but I didn't like them so much.

Last whipping I ever got was when I was about 15. I didn't hang the lines up on the hames the way he wanted them. After a couple of "hang those lines up like I showed you" and a couple of "no" answers, he doubled up the lines and used them on me. Then I hung them up right and we went into the house for dinner (not lunch).

Uncle had a team of Percherons into the late '50s. He used them infrequently to pull timber, but every spring (if conditions were right) they were used to pull a stoneboat with a wooden tank through his maple grove to gather sap. He most always worked by himself and they had done it so much that there was no need to "drive" them, they would walk at a slow pace and stop at the right time to allow buckets to be emptied. IIRC, both lived into their early thirties. Beautiful and intelligent animals.

Good luck on your decision!
