oil filter for hydraulic return

Anyone know why I couldn't use a Ford V-8 Oil filter and adapter as a filter on the return line of my stinger mount hydraulic system? Is it a pressure thing where I'd blow the canister or is it the level of filtration (5 micron versus 25)?

I do have a line on cheap hydro filters thanks to TOH but now my curiosity is up and I want to know answers.

I would check the volume compatibility. It should be listed in the filter specs by the manufacture of the filter. If it's greater than the pump volume at max rpm I would think it would work.

-Line size
-Gallons per minute
-Micron size of filtration
-Rated operating pressure
-Bypass valve/relief valve
-Anti drain back valve
If all of the above meet or exceed the specifications of your system you should be good to go.

You got some decent advice but some other things to remember. The return flow in many cases is greater than pump flow. You did not say what type of pump you have, but a rule of thumb is use a 30 micron for a gear or vane pump and a 10 micron for a piston pump.

My neighbor changed the oil in his log splitter and the local NAPA dealer freaked when asked about this same question. Hydraulic FILTER ONLY. I know the information sheet in the books say so too. When he took the old one apart the filter itself is a lower desity than a car filter.Jeffcat

I suspect it's the burst pressure rating as automotive lubrication systems aren't supposed to peak 100psi and hydraulic regularly sees 1000+

I've seen automotive filters burst from a high volume oil pump so I guess I knew part of my answer....

Baldwin B2 (Ford) is "Full-Flow Lube Spin-on (Also Used as Hydraulic or Transmission)", I"ve seen it used on different equipment. As long as it can handle the pressure, flow, ect. it should be good. Maybe/maybe not ok for some applications. I"ve seen similiar things done with filters before, not saying it"s right or wrong.
And 3/4-16 thread filters are common.
